We Came, We Saw, We Shopped: Capsule Design Festival

Sunshine, music, and a fashionable spirit filled the air of Hayes Valley on Sunday for the Capsule Design Festival outdoor market, featuring 130 independent and local designers. Thanks to the gorgeous and warm late-summer day, seemingly everyone in the neighborhood was out and about to partake in the fun.

Clothing for men, women, children and pets dominated the majority of the booths, although there were quite a few vendors selling jewelry, accessories, handmade paper products and goods for the home.

The defining factor? Participating sellers are chosen based on their originality in design and sustainability. Below, highlights from the event:

Don’t Miss: Style Lounge

style-lounge-august-09-event

Head east on Friday night for the latest Style Lounge, taking place across the Bay at the Oakland Museum of California. Along with shopping from participating vendors and makeovers by the SF Institute of Esthetics and Cosmetology, the event features a 10 p.m. fashion show from designers Revelation by M.E., K. Antoinette Collection, Oaklandish, O’Lover Hats, Helena de Natalio, Mama’s Little Babies, Andrea Wysocki, Versa Jewelry, Funky and Fabulous and Hearts Desire Jewelry.

And unlike many local shopping events aimed squarely at those of us on shopping missions, this one offers plenty to entertain your less-than-fashion-obsessed cohorts (and that’s always a bonus when you’re trying to round up the troops for a Friday night adventure). Along with the fashion show and shopping components, Style Lounge also includes a kids’ zone by the Chabot Space & Science Center, eight stages of live music, film screenings, a tattoo art exhibition, cocktail and food vendors and an official after party for attendees at the Uptown Nightclub.

Be one of the first to arrive on Friday, and you’ll receive a free tote bag from Oakland Unwrapped and a copy of Ready Made magazine. For details, check out the Style Lounge Facebook fan page.

The Indie Mart does its thang again this weekend at The Independent. You’ll find a bunch of new-the-mart designers in the mix, as well as shops like CC Rider and Shotwell on the scene. Along with cool stuff and adult beverages you can buy with your recessionary cash, D.I.Y. stations, live sewing and DJs will be on hand for your observational entertainment. Go on, twist our arms….just don’t spill our drinks in the process.

Chaiken Spring 2009 Sample Sale This Week

chaiken_s09samplesalesf

As fans of Chaiken’s always-chic, versatile women’s apparel and accessories, we were oh-so puh-leased to learn that the San Francisco-based company’s Spring 2009 Sample Sale starts tomorrow. It’s an ideal label to try alongside the recessionista (blek, we hate that word, too, but we used it anyway) shopping strategy of spending a little more on classic pieces that will span many seasons and contribute to the foundations of a wardrobe, rather than just contributing weight to hangers in the closet….

Stop by the SoMa headquarters for up to 70 percent off looks from the current collection.

We always love a good Chillin’ Productions event, and this weekend’s is no exception. We recommend bringing a large bag for toting home all the goodies you’ll find. Plus, you need to keep those hands free for draanks.
