The Do List: San Francisco Fashion Events Sept. 12-18

While last week was all about celebrating local shopping destinations, this week’s top style events beckon San Francisco fashion fans to gather en mass in festival settings. You’ll find the details on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

  • On Thursday, an event for style-conscious dudes (and their admirers, of course) takes over the Bently Reserve for the 3rd annual Styling the Modern Man. Included with your ticket are complimentary cocktails, grooming services, a fashion presentation, access to the Levi’s Geek Chic Lounge and advice from experts such as romance coach Joy Nordenstrom.
  • Coast into Friday evening by stopping by the latest installment of Sassy City Chicks, hitting Fort Mason Herbst Pavilion this week. Reasons to go include shopping, cocktails and mini spa services. Another draw: the Off the Grid food festival goes down at Fort Mason the same evening, making the waterfront venue a super solid combo outing for foodies and fashion-philes.
  • Close out the weekend by setting aside a chunk of Sunday to peruse Capsule, the urban air market that fills four+ Hayes Valley blocks twice a year with over 130 independent designers and artists selling men’s, women’s, and kid’s clothing, accessories, jewelry, paper goods, glassware and items for the home.

You can find details on all of these events and more happening this week on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

Scouting: Sassy City Chicks

The Sassy City Chicks event took place inside the massive Fort Mason Festival Pavilion.

Earlier this month, I stopped by the Sassy City Chicks media preview before the event at Fort Mason Festival Pavilion. I often go to shopping events not necessarily to shop, but to learn about and talk to new, interesting designers, labels and small businesses in the Bay Area. It’s one of my favorite ways to find new people and businesses to write about on SF Indie Fashion and in my regular assignments for 7×7.com and the San Francisco Chronicle publications.

I ran across several companies and designers that I’d never met before, and I am looking forward to featuring several of them in the coming days and weeks. I’m not going to mention them here, because a couple of them are new, new, new, and I want to feature them prominently on the site instead of just giving a brief mention.

Overall impressions of the event: it was an interesting mix of vendors in that those participating ran the gamut from earthy and eco-friendly to upscale artisan jewelry to inexpensive, ultra trendy finds apparel priced at even further discounts.

Below, a few images from my stroll.

Chevy was sponsoring the event, so there were several cars on display. This is the Volt, and I was intrigued by the snazzy exterior and the plug. We need more electric cars!

Inside the Volt. Sporty, no?

After tweeting about the folded detail on this Dama handbag, made of vegan leather and materials, several people tweeted me back to say you can also find it at Ambiance stores in San Francisco.

A trunk show in the literal sense.

This dress made me want to go on vacation. I apologize, because I did not write down the label or the vendor's name, so I can't really say much more about it than that.

Inside the goodie bag from the event: product from Tan Towel, Yes to Cucumbers, Belina, Nick Chavez, One Grey Day, Eco Tools and more.

And yes, of course, there was so much more to see. We featured one new local label, Holly Scott, who piqued my interest last week. Stay tuned for more to come.

The Do List: San Francisco Fashion Events April 4-10

Looking to shop from local, independent sources? The SF Indie Fashion Calendar is full of ways to do just that in the days ahead. Read on for our regular weekly dose of trunk sales, beauty happenings and fashion-y things to do in San Francisco:

  • The week stays quiet until Thursday, when the Sassy City Chicks Fashion Bash returns to San Francisco for an evening of shopping, cocktails and mini spa treatments. As for the merch, expect prices to be up to 80 percent off retail from labels such as BB Dakota, Rich & Skinny and Genetic Denim. The event is sponsored by Chevrolet, and the company will be offering free test rides in the company’s vehicles throughout the evening.
  • On Friday, two trunk shows have caught our attention. First up, a Nona Varnado Trunk Show and Pre-Season Sale at Pushbike offers cycling ladies a chance to scope out the latest from this New York label. Or head East for the afternoon to check out the BARE magazine D.I.Y. and Accessories Trunk Show on the Berkeley campus. The event includes student fashion designers dropping knowledge and demonstrating their tricks for creating wearable accessories, as well as hair feather extensions and a selection of jewelry and other adornments from the Rare Bird boutique.
  • Friday also marks the arrival of Zeitgeist Films’ Bill Cunningham New York to San Francisco. The films delves into the world of New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham, who was combing the streets for unique fashion when most of today’s street style photographers were still in diapers. It’s definitely a must-see film for any fashion fan.
  • Head downtown on Sunday to the Metreon for the spring Thread Show, which showcases purchasables from independent designers based in the Bay Area and beyond. While shopping is the main attraction, there are a slew of other reasons to go, including blogger style showdowns, live crafting at the D.I.Y. booth, a man cave for the dudes in attendance, mini manicures and makeup touch-ups, cocktails and art from local artists.
  • Also on Sunday comes an event that’s sure to pique the interest of denim lovers. The Chic Spy teams up with Joe’s Jeans for Jean+ology, which features a fashion show of the label’s denim, as well as wine and a chance to win a pair of jeans. The folks from Joe’s will also be on hand to give attendees tips for finding the right pair of jeans with a flattering fit.
