What Went Down: Barlow Trunk Show

Hayes Valley’s Azalea boutique hosted a trunk show for LA-based design team Molly Girard Coonan and Alice Barlow this past Saturday. For its first collaboration with the San Francisco shop, Barlow presented a 13-piece pre-fall capsule collection, inspired by the Mexican wrestling phenomenon Lucha Libre. Standout pieces from the range were a cutout tank, lace chino pants, asymmetrical cardigan and hooded moto leather jacket.

“We’re tomboys at heart. We wanted to create clothes that were comfortable, but that we’d still feel sexy in. We wanted to wear the boys’ clothing, but still make out with the boys,” designer Alice Barlow said of her menswear-inspired collection ($99-$999).

For Barlow, Azalea was a logical fit for a San Francisco trunk show.

“It’s my favorite store in San Francisco! The vibe fits in perfectly with our line and I love the girls who work here,” she said.

At the Hayes Valley shop, the floor feels like a collection of vignettes in a gallery setting, with menswear to the right, womenswear to the left, jewelry cases near the front and an alcove of beauty and skincare tucked away towards the back with a cleverly displayed assortment of denim. Popular lines include: James Perse, Shipley & Halmos, Elizabeth & James, Velvet, Eryn Brinie, and Helmut Lang.

“The Barlow collection fits in well with the other Los Angeles and New York designers we carry,” noted boutique manager Lesley Tanaka. “Because of our location, the Azalea customer is somewhat of a cross-section. We’ve adjusted our buying accordingly, with a good blend of high and low layering basics at prices ranging from $20 to $1,000.”

Dress for Less: gr.dano Sample Sale

If there’s a San Francisco-based fashion label that’s getting the lion’s share of the fashion buzz lately, it’s got to be gr.dano. Not only was the brand selected recently for the California Design Biennial (past honorees have include the likes of Rodarte and Trina Turk), but we hear through our trusty sources that a slew of celebs and more than a few prominent fashion publications have been scoping the line for upcoming appearances and style shoots. For the time being, we’ll stay mum on the particulars, but suffice to say that this is one local label poised for recognition far beyond the Bay Area.

And that’s all the more reason to head to the first gr.dano trunk show and sample sale, taking place today and tomorrow at 440 Brannan Studio, where you’ll often find the label’s Jill Giordano and Brian Scheyer hard at work on the line. It’s a rare chance to snag current and past season items from the line at up to 80 percent off retail.

Serial Cultura Group Show at Silverman Gallery

silverman_trunk_show_5_13_10

A trunk show featuring local designers always catches our eye, but one featuring labels who show only a few times a year turns us into serious gawkers. Hence our laser-like focus on this Thursday’s trunk show at Silverman Gallery. Organized by Serial Cultura’s Jennings, the show features the wonderfully graphic work of Micaela Greg, jewelry by Austin-based Crumley, new works by Stars + Ravens and, of course, Jennings’ own work.

Along with discounts on merch, reason enough to stop by awaits in a limited edition capsule collection from Stars + Ravens designer Sarah Borusso. We hear the small collection of one-of-a-kind dresses grew out of her experiments with a single dress and its transformation over time. Click the flyer for more on the participating designers.

Meet Kelly Lane + Bridge & Burn

Some days we’re all for a boyish, utilitarian look. Others, it’s a pretty dress we crave. Best to have both on hand – you never know what mood will strike. You’ll find both ends of the spectrum on display tomorrow during an all-day designer trunk show and evening party at Secession Art + Design.

Featuring current collections from Portland-based Bridge & Burn and Kelly Lane of Pittsburgh, the show means a chance to get to know two labels known for their independent style, meticulous construction and versatile wardrobe additions. Look to Bridge & Burn for tailored, yet casual men’s and women’s jackets (we hear the focus is on the men’s gear for this event) and Kelly Lane for an eyeful of color and a figure-flattering fit.

See it for yourself tomorrow at Secession (3361 Mission St., SF). Trunk show, 12-6 p.m.; gallery opening reception, 6:30-9:30 p.m.
