Room with a View

What a pretty city you are, San Francisco. Sometimes it reminds me of that Always Wear Sunscreen speech (the one awkwardly put to song) where the guy says something like, “Live in California, but leave before you become soft”. But who doesn’t want to become soft? It suits me just fine.

I was feeling a little preppy this weekend and can’t stop wearing my white button down. I like that it’s meant to be worn a little crinkled, because let’s face it, ironing is not going to happen.

BDG button down, Nasty Gal shorts, leather belt from Jeremy’s, Jeffrey Campbell clogs, various rings

Snap Judgment: Goorin Brothers Flora Hat

Our very-visual, (almost) chatter-free snap judgment of the day: the droplet-style pinstripe Flora hat, $55, created by local painter Amanda Lynn for the Goorin Brothers 1333 Minna Fall Collection, featuring the work of local artists and newly available for purchase online and in stores as of this month.

More snap judgments…

A Walk In The Park: Outside Lands Style

If you’re wondering what to wear to Outside Lands this year, just ask concert fanatic (and vintage fashionista) Meagan Ruiz, who has this look down to a tee.  My little sister certainly knows how to rock these perfectly weathered, strategically layered  and accessorized pieces to make for a comfortable and fashionable day in Golden Gate Park. Check out her outfit (mostly thrifted at Crossroads Trading Co.) paired with a few bracelets from Nepal to add a little international flare to this third generation San Francisco gal.

Good Looks: Coachella Fashion Redux

For this installment of the San Francisco Style Series, we turn to Alex and Amy of Refuses to Label. Fresh from an adventure to Southern California, the two San Francisco style mavens are back in the Bay with images and words from the Coachella music festival, held earlier this month. During the festival, the two oh-so-fashionable photographers captured images of each other and fellow concert-goers boasting personal style that reflects the SF Indie Fashion ethos and love for all things irreverent, independent, creative and visually appealing.

Coachella is Disneyland to modern hipster kids as we know them. From the music (Passion Pit, anyone?) to the sea of gladiator sandals and men in skinny cutoffs, it was easy to feel lost in an Urban Outfitters spring ad campaign. That is, until you look closer. These photos represent, to us, the unique relationship that can be created between adorner and garment when both are grounded in imagination and individuality. We chose the subjects based on the uniqueness and substance of the garments worn. Each of the people pictured had both a story to tell and personal hands-on involvement in creating what they chose to wear: a handmade feather headpiece, mother’s re-worked vintage, a tank dress torn to pieces by hand, sophisticated briefs under a sheer lace mini and graphic body art that compliments their panache. These particularly groovy kids all seem to get it: “come as you are, dressed as you are, dancing as you are.”

Top Hats: 1333 Minna Artists’ Collection by Goorin Brothers

We’ve always maintained that there’s a fine art to wearing a hat, so you can imagine we were intrigued by the idea of hats wearing fine art. Officially dropping this weekend, the spring 2010 1333 Minna collection from San Francisco-based Goorin Brothers pairs fine artists’ work with the hat company’s dapper head-toppers for a result that’s sure to attract style and art fans alike.

“It combines the classic authenticity of Goorin Brothers mixed with very edgy contemporary fine art,” Ben Goorin says of the latest collection, originally launched in 2005 and is known for combining urban-minded art with original fabrics, embroidery and custom printing methods.

In the works for nearly a year, the current collection bears the name of the company’s collaborative art studio in the Mission and features original work from artists such as Reyes, Steel, Yutaro Sakai, Kami, Sasu, Retna, Bert Krak, Lango, Michael Ryan and Orli Laqcuaio.

For Goorin, the project reflects the longtime San Francisco roots of his family’s company, founded in 1895.

“Our identity was born and raised in San Francisco,” he says, adding, “This is about doing something that’s authentic and extremely original.”

Want to get in on Goorin’s latest hat tricks? Head to the Haight Street shop on Saturday from 4-9 p.m. for the launch celebration. Along with music and free bevs, limited edition hand-printed posters by 1333 Minna artists and giveaways will be on offer with the purchase of a hat. Starting at 9 p.m., the party continues at 1333 Minna with a gallery installation of participating artists’ work.
