Shop Big on Small Business Saturday (+ $100 Reader Giveaway)

We visited a long list of great San Francisco shops with unique items, including Ruby, Stone Pony, Mira Mira and Gravel and Gold in the Mission, Noe Valley's Shoe Biz, Ambiance and Isso, as well as Pearl in the Inner Sunset.

Earlier this month, the folks at PAPER magazine and American Express asked us to head out on a shopping mission to local, independent boutiques we love in honor of Small Business Saturday. We were only too happy to oblige. After all, small businesses are a seriously big deal to us. Read on for the details on our adventure, get inspired to visit small bizzies on Saturday and enter our $100 giveaway from American Express.

As you know, and we know you know (and we know you know we know), small businesses make our city what it is and keep our lives full of new, unique things to do, see, eat, drink, buy and give as gifts. In that spirit, we dove into a few of our favorite shops in the Mission, Noe Valley and a few other hoods to uncover cool finds from the kinds of shops that lend San Francisco its local flavor.

If you shop on Small Business Saturday, register your American Express card online in advance, then use it on a purchase of $25 or more at a business that accepts American Express, and you’ll receive a $25 statement credit on your account.

These boots from Gravel and Gold are cooler looking than UGGS and made by an artisan in Bodega Bay. And would you believe it: they're machine washable.

How's this for stylish and local: these platform wedges are by Seal of the Sutro, the brand from the owners of the local Shoe Biz shops.

The polka dot shirt dress hanging on the racks is a best-seller at Mira Mira on 22nd.

Lots of local jewelry on display at Ruby, located in the Mission.

Vintage finds at relatively reasonable prices stood out at Stone Pony in the Mission.

Accessories and jewelry were on display in the window of Inner Sunset shop Pearl.

This post sponsored by American Express, though all opinions expressed here are our own, of course! What does that mean? In the interest of full disclosure, we’re letting you know that American Express compensated us for this post with gift cards, but we did the legwork, took the pics and used it as a chance to showcase some of our favorite local small businesses. We love our sponsors and hope you will, too. They make it possible for us to keep bringing you San Francisco’s independent fashion news five days a week.

The Do List: San Francisco Fashion Events May 16-22

The focus this week is on locally-made goods – and we’re not just talking about what’s happening on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar. Throughout the City, the annual San Francisco Small Business Week coincides with the start of the inaugural SFMade Week. Add new resources for local designers, two notable fashion shows and a sweet pop-up shop, and we’re soon busy, busy, busy.

  • The first Fashion Market SF Designer Workshop takes place tonight at the San Francisco Fashion Collective showrooms. During the new series, fashion pros and Fashion Market SF founders Karri Ann Frerichs and Leslie Lum bring their sales and marketing chops to the table to help designers in the process of launching their lines. If you can’t make tonight’s event, more of the small group workshops are on the horizon, so check the SF Indie Fashion Calendar for details.
  • San Francisco Small Business Week means plenty of opportunities for local business owners (and those aspiring to join their ranks) to network, learn new skills and increase their visibility. Business owners will find Wednesday’s all-day free conference full of seminars on everything from finding local subcontractors to social media, while Saturday’s citywide Shop Your Neighborhood initiative is an excellent excuse to check out some of the independent boutiques in your ‘hood. Saturday also marks the start of the first SFMade Week from the eponymous nonprofit, whose work to help manufacturers of everything from messengers bags to artisan chocolate stay within city limits has landed it much recognition as of late. For fans of independent fashion, the SFMade Pop-Up Shop in the incubation space next to The Summit on Saturday promises a chance to shop from local names such as Kyler by Joy O, Sally Spicer, Rickshaw Bagworks and Tamo Design.
  • The Black V fashion show on Saturday night intrigues for three key reasons. Not only does the “masquerade” fashion event means you can don pretty much anything you want and get away with it, it’s also a benefit for the fashion department at City College and one of the first times Project Runway‘s Jay Nicolas Sario has shown his work locally since his stint on the show.
  • Continuing the spring student fashion show season, Sunday brings the annual City College of San Francisco Fashion Show, a runway event featuring the work of fashion department students in the always-flashy environs of Ruby Skye. This year, the school is going big for the show in honor of the fashion program’s 10th anniversary. That said, the ticket prices remain low, with admission starting at $10 for students and increasing to just $15 for members of the general public.

You can find details on all of these events and more happening this week on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.
