We Came, We Saw, We Shopped: Indie Mart

A gorgeous sunny summer Sunday, a slew of designers and a crowd hungry for beer and D.I.Y. set the stage for last weekend’s Indie Mart at Thee Parkside in lower Potrero. After an eight-month hiatus, the well-attended event, a fundraiser for founder Kelly Malone’s ongoing cancer treatments, was back with gusto and a serious assortment of independent designers displaying their latest.

We strolled through the outdoor market, past groups eagerly hovering over the make-your-own terrarium table and digging into locally-made edibles near the entrance, to find a pop-up from on-the-move shop Shotwell, new work from designer Mariele Williams, a selection of super bargain-priced samples from Turk + Taylor, cute onesies and tees from Animal Instincts, tribal necklaces from Rachael Kinsey Designs and striking steel earrings from Push Pull Designs, among many others.

Williams creates necklaces, headpieces and earrings that combine natural materials, chains and antique sensibilities.

Notably on-trend for fall, tribal elements were easy to spot in jewelry from Rachel Kinsey Designs.

While prepping for its new space to open, Shotwell brought a selection of offerings, including lots of vintage pieces, to the event.

As for the new location's opening date, we were told it could be any moment, though there is still some building out to do. So keep your eyes trained on the shop's Facebook page if you're one of the many waiting with baited breath.

Animal Instincts owner Jamai Lowell with his apparel line featuring original sketches, many of which include San Francisco icons. As you might guess, we're big fans of the Sutro design and its "play locally" missive.

Pop Stars: Noise Pop ‘N Shop

Shopping with local independent designers is music to our ears. No doubt we’ll be humming tunes aplenty as we peruse the jewelry, apparel and other unique finds on offer this weekend during Noise Pop’s Pop ‘n Shop event.

Expect over 40 local creatives to be on the scene Saturday at this free-to-attend event, including Colleen Mauer Designs, Intwined, Turk + Taylor and Rock Candy Design.

Just What the Doctor Ordered: Lovesick III

Alexey_gulenko_20100106_Alexandr-31-1Where will you be as Valentine’s Day 2010 draws to its inevitable conclusion? If you’re in love with local fashion, then true romance awaits at Sunday’s Lovesick III, a fashion event showcasing the work of local designers alongside musical entertainment a la DJ Irene Hernandez-Feiks and a live set by The Goldenhearts (get there at 7:30 p.m. for that), an art installation, a trunk sale, raffle goodness and even a kissing booth.

Launched by San Francisco designer Alexandria von Bromssen three years ago, the annual event draws together the City’s edgier, underground creators of apparel, lingerie and accessories. Sidling down the runway this year will be looks from Alexandria von Bromssen, Miss Velvet Cream, Richard Hallmarq, Miranda Caroligne, Kayo, Medium Reality, My Dirty Dishes, Jasmin Zorlu, Ghetto Goldilocks, Tamo Design, Gallerah and Invisible Hero, among others.

For a show held each year on the day devoted to love, it’s altogether fitting that the show itself is largely a labor of love.

“Everything that we’re doing is out of pocket. It’s our passion. It’s all that we have, and we don’t have big budgets,” says von Bromssen of the participants’ efforts to make the show a success.

As for the event name, it sums up a part of von Bromssen’s own experiences in matters of the heart.

“I love hard, and I tend to be lovesick,” she tells us.

Lovesick isn’t the only big event in von Bromssen’s world this week. She also just launched her label’s online store. Below, we offer you a visual sampling of what you’ll find in store with images culled from her past and current collections.
