Video: Origami Wins at Beauty Expo Style Competition

To go from the shower to runway-ready in anything less than an hour should be declared an art. But the six teams in the SFFMA’s recent Beauty Expo Style Competition had just 30 minutes to create high-drama looks.

When the time was up, Sophia Guerra and Kelli Eng from Rockridge’s Lucero Hair Salon took home a cash prize with their Japanese street style-inspired look, complete with origami paper cranes they folded on the ride over.

The competition was just one element of the four-hour event from the San Francisco Fashion Merchants Alliance. Hosted by Pigment Cosmetics on Saturday, May 28, the evening also included opportunities to connect with local fashion bloggers and attend a model boot-camp session with veteran model coach Charleston Pierce.

Runway to Racks: Lorian Lindsay

In 48 hours’ time, we’ve seen the latest from Lorian Lindsay head down the runway and arrive on the racks in two San Francisco shops devoted to independent fashion. On Saturday night, Lindsay showed off her fall 2010 collection for the first time during A Night of Wine and Fashion at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Today, the San Francisco-based designer announced the arrival of her current season at 440 Brannan Studio and Wonderland, both of which offer a variety of apparel and accessories made by local labels.

During the Saturday evening event, we snagged Lindsay for a quick post-show chat.

“With each collection, I always start with vintage inspiration,” Lindsay tells us.

For fall, which the designer describes as “equestrian prairie,” expect more fitted jackets and ready-to-wear pieces that go from casual slacks and day dresses to a floor-length evening gown.

While you’ll have to wait a few months to feast your eyes on the fall line, you can get a sneak peek by checking out what went down the runway on Saturday in the short video below.

Video: Spread on Marmalade’s San Francisco Style

For our very first (be gentle, please) SF Indie Fashion style video, we tapped Marmalade boutique owner Hope Schaffer-Colling to show us quick, easy tips for turning the basic jeans-and-tank uniform into cute, casual outfits worthy of work or play.

“This is the basic stuff everybody has in their closets,” Schaffer-Colling told us before the shoot at the Union Street shop.

The laid-back style shown here reflects what you’ll find in-store at this Cow Hollow go-to for current looks at affordable prices (almost everything in the shop is under $100).
