The Do List: San Francisco Fashion Events March 14-20

Old and new are equally likely to capture the attention of San Francisco fashion fans this week, thanks to events and happenings focused on everything from upcycling to vintage fashion and the latest wedding products and services. Want in? Turn to the SF Indie Fashion Calendar or read on for our weekly dose of trunk sales, beauty happenings, fashion shows and places to shop from independent sources:

  • If you’re feeling hands-on this week, you’re in luck. There are several notable events for those who want to make, create and D.I.Y. For professional makers, there’s an SFMade orientation event that’s free and will introduce you to all the local non-profit’s programs and services. Also this week, learn how to make fingerless gloves at Urban Bazaar and upcycle items from your wardrobe during a two-day Remix Design Workshop that starts this weekend at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art.
  • Friday’s opening shindig for new Hayes Valley store Reliquary offers a chance to get to explore the shop’s assortment of apparel, accessories, folk art and curious collectibles.
  • Once the weekend rolls around, vintage fans have one of the season’s best events to look forward to with the return of the semi-annual Vintage Fashion Expo. Over 85 dealers will be on hand offering apparel, accessories and textiles that hail from as far back as 1850 to 1980. While it’s not an event known for serious bargains, it is one that serious collectors and vintage connoisseurs never fail to have on their lists. We think it’s an excellent place to go for inspiration and unusual treasures you won’t find anywhere else. Students with valid ID can get in free on Sunday, and anyone can save $2 off the $10 admission with this coupon.
  • Brides-to-be in search of unique and local services for their big day may want to carve out some time on Sunday afternoon for the San Francisco debut of A Soolip Wedding, a popular wedding resource event that’s a favorite among SoCal almost-marrieds. Along with 40+ vendors showing wedding products and services, there will be a fashion show featuring gowns from Maiden Lane bridal salon Marina Morrison, a panel discussion with experts on topics such as etiquette and bridal beauty, a Champagne toast, raffle, cake tasting and a gift bag for attendees. Tickets are $35.

You can find details on all of these events and more happening this week on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

Resin Ring Bling: Colors by Liza

These inexpensive adjustable disc rings from Colors by Liza caught our eye at last week’s Fashion Feud event (in case you haven’t heard, we’re suckers for sparkly objects). An artist based in San Francisco, Liza uses different-textured resins and mixed media on the cheerfully-hued business card compacts, pill boxes, clutch purses, iPod armor and cigarette cases she creates in her SoMa studio.

The overall effect is unabashedly crafty, yes, but also girlishly cute and gift-able for a variety of ages.
