In Pane Sight: Piedmont Boutique

Halloween-worthy sparkles and spangles, wigs and bright hues reign in the window at Piedmont Boutique on Haight Street in San Francisco, CA.

In the window at Piedmont Boutique:  Halloween is just around the corner, and, like every year, the pressure is on to bust out your best, most-ass-kickingest costume ever. So, will you bedazzle yourself silly in sequins, channel your alter ego with a colored wig, get seductive in some sexy stockings or throw on some hot pants and be a disco diva? For any of these, look no further than Piedmont Boutique.

No matter how tame, tacky or straight terrifying your taste may be, you are bound to find something to fulfill your Halloween hopes at this Haight shop. Just look for the giant legs in red heels hanging over Haight. You can’t miss it. But if for some reason you do, Piedmont resides at 1452 Haight Street (cross street: Ashbury).

A twisted take on Miss America, perhaps?

Or a wilder version of Wonder Woman?

Another option: think pink.

In Pane Sight: perch

perch, 654 Chenery St., San Francisco

In the window at perch: handcrafted home decor items, designer kitchen supplies, jewelry and more wait inside this charming boutique just around the corner from the Glen Park BART station.

Be sure to check out the iPad case from collaborators Ork Posters and DODOCase. Its San Francisco street map in the form of literary icons etched onto a chic, yet tough shell looks so similar to a Moleskine notebook that casual observers may never know the difference.

Paradise in the ‘Loin: The Tropics Grand Opening

SF-based illustrator Hannah Stouffer is hoping that snow cones and creative vibes will lure customers into her new Upper Tenderloin boutique, The Tropics, when it opens this weekend, but that the highly-curated selection of merchandise will keep them coming back for more.

Opening its doors for business this Saturday night, the space initially served purely as Stouffer’s studio before she realized its true potential. She describes the transition as a “party in the front, business in the back type of deal; kind of like a reverse mullet.” (As you may be aware, we’re all over the mullet reference.)

The Tropics will carry brands such as Blood is the New Black and Grand Array, both of which feature Stouffer’s work, as well as various prints by selected artists. You can also expect to find a few things from Beautiful Decay, Juxtapoz, Living Proof, SPRFKR, David V. D’Andrea and Andrei Bouzikov.

The Tropics is Stouffer’s second retail venture, the first being Studio 3579, which Stouffer ran with two other women before they decided to embark upon new opportunities. This time around, Stouffer says that aside from the help of her assistant and friends, the new space is entirely her own undertaking. The Illustration and Erotic Art Editor at Juxtapoz magazine, a full time freelance artist with big name clients such as The North Face, Chronicle Books and Nike (she just wrapped up a San Francisco edition running shoe that will be released in the fall) and now a shop owner, Stouffer has most definitely proven herself as an entrepreneurial force to be reckoned with.

The Tropics (727 Leavenworth St. San Francisco, CA) will be holding its grand opening and “First Offering” this Saturday, July 16, 2011 from 7- 10 pm.

The Do List: San Francisco Fashion Events July 5-10

Good golly, sneaky-fast summer, how did it get to be July? Probably something to do with all the stylish adventures afoot. You’ll find this week’s top San Francisco fashion events on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar, and we’ve called out a few favorites below.

  • A reason to venture to the Inner Sunset arrives on Saturday, when SET Boutique brings its summer collection to Urban Bazaar’s garden for a Fair Trade Fashion Garden Party. You’ll find summer looks on display during the 1:30 p.m. fashion show from ethical labels such as Mata Traders and Alternative Apparel, as well as light food and drinks.
  • We’re always excited at the return of the massive Renegade Craft Fair, which takes over Fort Mason this weekend. With over 200 artists touting innovative crafts, fashion and handmade accessories, the event is a browser’s dreamland. Workshops, booze, food and a free photo booth only make it better.
  • Should you fancy a drive north, the charming town of Petaluma beckons with a grand opening party for the new boutique from designer Robindira Unsworth, whose bohemian-gone-glam baubles are found in stores such as Anthropologie and Neiman Marcus.

You can find details on all of these events and more happening this week on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

Take Note: Fancy French Cologne Launches

Christine Bolghand and Carly Schneider-Clark know a thing or two about notes. Before launching their new online shop, Fancy French Cologne, the duo mastered musical notes as the indie rock band Finest Dearest. Despite its name, their latest venture has nothing to do with notes of the olfactory persuasion. Rather, it’s a boutique imbued with San Francisco-inspired style.

Now open for your perusal, the online store features labels such as Tulle, Dolce Vita, Frock! by Tracy Reese and Fashion Spy, as well as handmade apparel and accessories such as the Monserat De Lucca gold teeth necklace (shown above), the exclusive Minx Shop scoop-back Pearly Gates dress and a blue velvet clutch by San Francisco-based Kiu Designs.

Along with the easy going, season-defying vibe of the clothes, the mixture of small, independent brands, unique handmade items and a dash of trendy offerings at affordable prices (much of the inventory is under $100) make this shop nothing short of…well, noteworthy.
