We Came, We Saw, We Shopped: Renegade Craft Fair

Inside Fort Mason

In a time of easy access to how-to videos and blogs, major craft fairs might only serve as inspiration for whatever your next D.I.Y. project might be. But walk inside the Renegade Craft Fair, and you’ll quickly learn that craft has gone far beyond the basics. Recycled book covers turned into laser-etched butterfly pins? Check. A necktie made out of wood? Check.

At the Fort Mason show last weekend, more than 200 vendors brought a variety of booths, filled with everything from incredibly detailed jewelry and hand painted dinnerware sets to funky screen-printed tees. Not only did this installment of the Renegade Craft Fair reveal that flare and innovation are still alive in today’s saturated D.I.Y. market, but the free-to-attend event also made the latest in craft accessible to all.

Here are a few shots of what we found at the Renegade Craft Fair:

The Do List: San Francisco Fashion Events July 5-10

Good golly, sneaky-fast summer, how did it get to be July? Probably something to do with all the stylish adventures afoot. You’ll find this week’s top San Francisco fashion events on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar, and we’ve called out a few favorites below.

  • A reason to venture to the Inner Sunset arrives on Saturday, when SET Boutique brings its summer collection to Urban Bazaar’s garden for a Fair Trade Fashion Garden Party. You’ll find summer looks on display during the 1:30 p.m. fashion show from ethical labels such as Mata Traders and Alternative Apparel, as well as light food and drinks.
  • We’re always excited at the return of the massive Renegade Craft Fair, which takes over Fort Mason this weekend. With over 200 artists touting innovative crafts, fashion and handmade accessories, the event is a browser’s dreamland. Workshops, booze, food and a free photo booth only make it better.
  • Should you fancy a drive north, the charming town of Petaluma beckons with a grand opening party for the new boutique from designer Robindira Unsworth, whose bohemian-gone-glam baubles are found in stores such as Anthropologie and Neiman Marcus.

You can find details on all of these events and more happening this week on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

The Do List: San Francisco Fashion Events Dec. 13-19

With the holiday season in full swing, the SF Indie Fashion Calendar is full of events to keep San Francisco fashion lovers busy with trunk sales, beauty happenings, fashion shows and opportunities to shop from independent sources. Here’s our pick of top San Francisco fashion and style events this week:

  • Start the week off with an opulent evening of Mad Men-inspired, eco-friendly fashion during the 6th Annual Gorgeous and Green Gala. Tickets may be steep ($250 and up), but proceeds benefit Global Green, and the evening promises enticements such as an eco-fashion show and an appearance by Mad Men’s Alison Brie.
  • Kicking off on Tuesday at 440 Brannan Studio is the three-day gr.dano Holiday Size Sale, which means a chance to scoop up this local label’s architectural women’s apparel at up to 75 percent off retail. The catch? Only two sizes will be available each day, so you’ll have to head down to the SoMa location on the day that suits you best.
  • East Bay jewelry designer Melissa Joy Manning, best known for fashioning semi-precious and precious stones into organically-shaped baubles, opens her first retail store on Thursday in Berkeley. Swing by for wine and Champagne, as well as 20 percent off everything in the shop.
  • Once the weekend rolls around, we’d recommend knocking the last items off your list with a visit to a multi-designer shopping event featuring local talents. Two to try: The Renegade Craft Fair, taking place in SoMa at the Concourse Exhibition Center, and Indie Bazaar 3, which goes down at the Metreon. Both events will have a slew of worthy folks selling all manner of clothing, accessories and giftables for men, women and children.

You can find details on all of these events and more happening this week on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

Flyer Madness: Shopping Events, Fashion Shows + Parties

Staring today, we’ve got the flyers to prove that the holiday madness is more than underway. In fact, it’s reaching its annual all-out frenzy, evidenced by a flurry of shopping events, fashion shows and parties such as the Noise Pop Holiday Shop, Nightvision at Harlot, Artillery fashion show, Secession holiday party, Renegade Craft Fair and the Five and Diamond Holiday Bazaar.

There are, of course, plenty more independent fashion happenings and diversions waiting for your perusal and approval on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

SF Indie Fashion News Roundup: Hambone Designs, Oxenrose Blow Out Class, Marie Denee Launch and more…

Sun+late August+Friday=we don’t wanna work no more. In other news….

Streetsblog San Francisco alerts us to local bike bag maker Hambone Designs, and we like what we see (and not just because they named one of the stylish bike utility bags The Balzac, pictured).

The Renegade Craft Fair is now taking applications from designers for its San Francisco holiday event.

Marie Denee of The Curvy Fashionista fame will launch an online boutique for plus-size style-seekers this fall. We applaud this. There is a serious drought of great plus size fashion in this world and what is out there is often hard for shoppers to find. And besides, style has nothing to do with size. Like you needed us to tell you that. The launch is currently slated for Sept. 9.

New York, we hate you. Sniff.*

Dude, it’s time you learned how to blow yourself.** For that, go to Oxenrose in Hayes Valley on Sept. 24 for the salon’s first blow-dry class. It’s $75, but you can use half of that towards the purchase of products to help you keep you reproduce the ‘do at home. Email ashley (at) oxenrose (dot) come to sign up.

Local jewelry designer John S. Brana gets a show at Bloomies.

Crafty people, hear this: You can now obtain the entire box set of Craft Magazine for $75 (reg. $150) when you use the coupon code CRAFTSUB at checkout.

Project TransAction has launched a line of handmade leather dog collars (available at Jeffrey’s Natural Pet Foods) and is currently have a 20 percent off online sale on all leather goods.

Crossroads Trading Company got in touch to remind us that a back-to-school wardrobe doesn’t have to cost your schoolbooks’ weight in gold. Buy, sell, trade. You know the deal.

We are quite intrigued by the Noe Valley blog’s news that Green 11 may be opening up another shop in San Francisco. We love the idea behind the company, which allows you to bring your own containers to fill up on eco-friendly cleaning supplies and beauty products.

If you love Moxsie as much as we do, you’ll want to sign up for the site’s newsletter. It means an additional 10 percent off your next purchase of $50 or more.

Acrimony has a new look.

*Really, we are just sickened with jealousy. Someone please record this and send us a vid. We’ll do something nice for you.

**Typically on Fridays, we momentarily regress into 12-year-olds.
