Local Jewelry Makers Display During ArtSpan SF Open Studios

Sterling silver O necklace and chain by Kristiana Spaulding

Druzy rings by Claudia Kussano

The blue crystal necklace by Phylis Johnson-Silk features sterling silver findings and a sterling silver clasp with inlaid turquoise.

Along with pre-Halloween costume drama, there’s one fashion-minded inevitability you can count on October in San Francisco: lots of lovely locally-made jewelry on display during ArtSpan Open Studios, an annual event inviting the public into the City’s many artists’ studios over a five-weekend stretch.

And while fine art in the form of paintings, sculpture and photography dominate the offerings, there are numerous San Francisco jewelry designers showing their work each weekend. It’s a chance to step inside the maker’s workspace, chat a little about the process behind the pieces and purchase directly from designers.

The ArtSpan web site lists each weekend’s participating artists, a list that includes such jewelry makers as Phylis Johnson-Silk, Claudia Kussano and Kristiana Spaulding.

Appliques Gone Rad: Nicacelly

nicacelly_openstudiosflyer

We’ve been big fans of Nicacelly apparel since first stumbling across the label from San Francisco designer Nicole Markoff at RAG Co-Op four years ago.

We’re doubly impressed by Markoff’s ability to make floral appliques look edgy in a street-inspired urban way and her consistent use of bold hues and graphics to amp up the otherwise casual look of her gear.

But what seriously gets us every time is the fit. Markoff knows how to create pieces that flatter in subtle ways through the gentle flair of a shirt at the hips, the wrap-styling of a top or the careful placement of an obi belt.

Want to see Nicacelly’s designs in person? You’re in luck. She’ll be opening her SoMa studio this weekend as part of ArtSpan’s Open Studios. An added incentive? We hear Eden of Secession will also be on the scene with wares from her Bernal Heights boutique and gallery.

Checking out pics from Kelly Lane and De Novo has us in an autumnal kind of mood today. Good thing we’ll be able to spot both at Secession Art and Design this weekend during the Lower Bernal Heights’ boutique and gallery’s open studios weekend.

And these two labels are hardly the only ones showing off during the space’s fall show. Check the flyers below for all the detes….
