Secondhand News: 31 Rax Hits the Mission

A new destination for seekers of affordable, fashion-forward thrift has opened on the stretch of Mission flanked by Bernal Heights and Noe Valley. Dubbed 31 Rax, the shop offers a colorful array of clothing in an art-filled space complete with hardwood floors and a small lounge area.

Occupying the space formerly held by Bad Joe’s gym near other local favorites such as Blue Plate, Secession Art + Design, Locavore, the Argus and the Royal Cuckoo, the San Francisco secondhand boutique carries an ever-changing assortment of contemporary and vintage apparel and accessories handpicked by shop owner, Stephanie Madrinan (but you can call her Steph).

Named in honor of Madrinan’s birthday, New Year’s Eve, and her love for racks and racks of clothes, the shop has a comfy seating area and ample space in back for events and gatherings such as a speed dating shindig that took place there recently and an upcoming art show on Nov. 18.

But the real reason to go is Steph’s colorful selection of funky sweaters, 80′s-minded dresses and fun accessories – all at relatively affordable prices. A vintage python-print blazer made its way into my closet for a mere $14, and most items are priced between $9 and $20 bucks.

Stay tuned for accessories and wearables by independent designers such as Intwined, Angelique B and Garage Glamorous.

Last but not least, know this before you go: there’s a Scoutmob deal currently running that will save you 50 percent.

The Do List: San Francisco Fashion Events Aug. 29-Sept. 5

Inside new Pacific Heights boutique Curve

With a holiday weekend looming large, Burning Man in full swing and Fashion Week just around the corner, it’s a quieter week than most on the San Francisco fashion scene. But there are still stylish adventures to be had in the coming days, including a new boutique opening, a trunk show and the launch of an independent fashion line. You’ll find the details on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

  • Fans of luxe labels will embrace the opening of Curve, whose San Francisco location is now open in Pacific Heights. The upscale shop that owner Nevena Borissova first launched in Los Angeles in 1997 arrives in one of the City’s toniest shopping neighborhoods with racks boasting labels such as Alexander McQueen, Burberry Prorsum, Alexander Wang, Isabel Marant, Balmain, Christopher Kane and Gareth Pugh.
  • On Sunday, say no to short-sleeve farmer’s tans and hello to margaritas during the launch party at Sui Generis for new men’s tank top line Cute Tank.
  • Also on Sunday, head east for Convert’s Prairie Underground Trunk Show to sample the label’s looks for fall and take advantage of wardrobe tips from an on-site stylist. Grade school-themed treats (think PB&J cupcakes and spiked “Capri-in-the-Sun” bevs) will be on tap. Continuing the back-to-school theme, post a pic of yourself from your formative years on the Berkeley shop’s Facebook wall, and you could win a piece from the Prairie Underground fall collection – the shot with the most “likes” wins.
  • And although it should go without saying, the most fashionable thing you can do this week: enjoy summer’s last long weekend.

You can find details on all of these events and more happening this week on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

As Wonderland opened its doors on the Mission end of 24th street last Thursday night, we swung by to check out the new space from Irene Hernandez-Feiks and Houston Feiks of Chillin’ Productions. Inside, we found a veritable haven for fans of local, independent fashion. The gallery-boutique stocks accessories and apparel ($20-$250) for men and women by a diverse array of local talents, ranging from polished pieces by gr.dano and Verrieres & Sako to rocker-friendly tops by Venus Superstar and colorful, unique pieces from Silver Lucy.

“We’re going to have super edgy, hipster, funky to something that can go to work,” Hernandez-Feiks says of the variety hanging from the racks.

Guys will find a front section devoted to them, with Estrella Tadeo shirts and Rebel t-shirts accompanying Gytha Mander menswear. There’s also a small selection of items for kids, something Hernandez-Feiks hopes to expand in the coming months. Along with clothing, accessories abound, including LynnEyeStyle eyewear made from vintage frames (Hernandez-Feiks showed us a smashing Givenchy pair she had in stock), Sweet Meats pillows and Momoca hats – just to name a very few.

Shoppers seeking one-of-a-kind and custom apparel are in luck, as most designers available in the shop are ready and willing create made-to-order clothing and accessories.

The second half of the shop is a devoted gallery space, where monthly shows will display art and furniture created by local artists. In front, the shop’s windows await student art installations Hernandez-Feiks has in the works, thanks to her connections with local art and fashion schools.

“For me, it’s really important to support local talent, and we have so many good people here. I want to show people that in San Francisco, we can do really well. You can find a shirt that is made better than something in Bloomingdale’s,” Hernandez-Feiks says.

Our thoughts exactly…

Brooklyn Circus SF Reopens

brooklyn-circus-san-francisco-reopening

For proof that good things can come from pain-in-the-ass disasters, look no further than the San Francisco outpost of The Brooklyn Circus. The Fillmore destination best known for its hip take on dapper menswear shut its doors a few weeks back after a flood from the building overhead infiltrated the shop, damaging its ceiling and interiors.

But instead of being deterred by the experience, the folks behind the shop regrouped and revamped by adding a new shoe section and rolling out new products just in time for the opening party, taking place tonight during the first annual Fillmore Art Walk. Among the new merch available in the store are hats and caps in Donegal tweed and a selection of shoes and sneakers from labels such as PF Flyers, Spring Court and Thorocraft.

For more about the inner workings of this influential independent fashion brand, check out Pixel Vision’s recent interview with Brooklyn Circus Art Director Gabe Garcia.

Want to celebrate with the BKC? Stop by tonight for an open bar and shopping from 5 to 10 p.m.
