Serious Brass from Jewelry Designer Heart’s Desire

Go big or go home is the message behind the Filigree Fantasy II necklace from Oakland-based design duo Heart’s Desire. Speaking of desires, we’ve been craving larger-than-life accessories lately to pair with the streamlined tops and simpler classic pieces that we find ourselves attracted to this season – and this one-of-kind piece fits right in.

Created using vintage filigrees and bird charms in raw and gold-plated brass, the necklace is one in a series using designer Ann Marie Hodrick’s extensive collection of vintage brass pieces. On her blog, she likens the experience of assembling this piece to that of “putting together a monochromatic jigsaw puzzle.”

Arranging the individual components into a cohesive whole may have required some mental wrangling on Hodrick’s part, but the result is one we’d gladly don without a struggle.

Mad for Nola Bella’s Plaid

These days, carefully chosen accessories (and not entirely new outfits) are the saviors of many economy-stricken wardrobes. Local designer Jill Scharmen’s latest NolaBella jewelry collection offers up a clever way to do plaid without going overboard or succumbing to the huge plaid scarf trend those of us who reside in the Mission are reminded of every time we venture outside (to be fair, we do not hate the scarf trend. But we are a bit hung up and don’t like wearing what everyone else has on).

Needless to say, when we spotted the Mad Plaid Necklaces pictured here, we were smitten. No, we were twitterpated. In short, they make us happy.

Available in gray glenplaid and blackwatch plaid, each handmade necklace features loops of cotton fabric knotted together and suspended from a sturdy, industrial-chic gunmetal chain.

When we asked Jill about her inspiration for the pieces, she told us:

I’ve always loved plaid and think accessories are a good way to pull it off, as it could end up being too “trendy.” But because I chose classic plaids, I think this offers a person a unique and a new classic way to wear the plaids. I also have been wanting to experiment in new materials that still offer a classic, modern twist on jewelry and will stand the test of time. So much so, that I am currently trying out new fabrics for my soon to be launched Spring/Summer ’09 line.

We can’t wait to see it! In the meantime, we’ll all just have to feast our eyes on another pic:

The Twitterpated Necklace by Ampersand Designs

It’s that special week of the year when all anyone can talk about is love, how much it rocks, how much it sucks, how to find it, how to deal with it once you’ve found it.

But talking about love in the broad sense can get boring fast. The nuances of love, now those are much more exciting. While perusing Ampersand Designs’ etsy shop today, we spied the Bay Area jewelry line’s Twitterpated Signature Necklace and were reminded of a special stage of love that deserves recognition this week: the state of twitterpation.

We dare say this may very well be the best love stage there is: silly, lighthearted, full of flutter and happiness. Just like the creatures that put a name on it during one of the best Disney movies ever made (and one that we still can’t watch as adults because of the fire scene).

We think this makes a perfect Valentine’s Day gift for the twitterpated person in your life. Through Feb. 14, the etsy shop is sweetening the deal with 40 percent off select items.
