The Economics of Art looks to be an excellent event for lovers and supporters of local independent fashion. It’s a great speaker line-up featuring prominent folks from the world of Bay Area fashion design and people with a variety of experiences in making fashion careers – and art – work as viable sources of income through retail, writing and publishing books, teaching and professional organizations.

There’s also a fashion show associated with the event that features student designers from San Francisco State and the Academy of Art. And last but not least, proceeds benefit the future San Francisco Fashion Awards.

For more can’t miss San Francisco fashion events happening in the coming days, hit up the SF Indie Fashion Calendar….

Jasmin Zorlu’s Top Hats

You like to think you’ve got a good head on your shoulders. Why not put something on it that does it justice? The next time you’re seeking the perfect noggin-topper, consider a custom-made piece from designer Jasmin Zorlu‘s fall 2008 collection.

The local milliner’s hand-blocked, hand-stitched hats incorporate materials like fur felt, fish skins and leather in rounded, form-fitting shapes that hug the crown and frame the face. Perfect for San Francisco’s windy, yet temperate weather, Zorlu’s bonnets, helmets, cloches and caps are strikingly modern, playfully sculptural and, yet, still versatile enough to flatter a vintage-inspired cocktail dress by night and a pair of jeans on their way to hang in Zeitgeist’s beer garden on the next sunny Saturday afternoon (not that anyone ever, ever actually tries to look hip or cool or anything even remotely close to ironic when they go to Zeitgeist).

If you’re looking for Zorlu’s touch from a more mainstream label, check out the hybrid hat collection she recently developed for Goorin.

Want to check Zorlu’s designs out in person? This weekend, you can view them at Arara’s grand opening celebration and benefit for the Princess Project (check the SF Indie Fashion Calendar for details).
