SF Fashion Events: Cat Seto, Indie Mart Returns + Divisadero Art Walk

It’s a quieter week for San Francisco fashion than most, but there are still worthy events you won’t want to miss in the coming days. First up, meet designer and author Cat Seto on Tuesday at her Russion Hill boutique. Later in the week, applaud the return of the Divisadero Art Walk and Indie Mart, both taking place on Friday evening along the Divisadero corridor. Head to the ‘hood to peruse galleries and art in local businesses. Find an outpouring of locally-designed goods from independent designers and arts on offer at this special nighttime edition of the ‘Mart.

We’re adding new fashion happenings all the time. Find details on these and other upcoming San Francisco fashion events waiting on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

We Came, We Saw, We Shopped: Holiday Indie Mart

Kelly Malone of Indie Mart and The Bold Italic combined powers just before the holidays for a special edition of Indie Mart that, not surprisingly, turned out to be a festive shopping occasion packed with Bay Area-produced clothing, yummy holiday treats, a crop of recycled cardboard trees to take home and decorate and a “Dirty Santa” for photo opps.

On the scene were merry shoppers and party-goers packed into the brand new Bold Italic office space on 34 Page Street to celebrate the fresh digs and pick up last-minute gifts. As often happens at Indie Mart events, a fun time was had by all.

Here are some of our favorite locally-made products from the evening:

Handmade leather bags by Hawke + Carry, handpainted by calligraphy artist Aoi Yamaguchi

The hip, 2011 version of Lisa Frank: cute little notebooks from Studio Nico.

Casa Murriguez's top seller of the night: Deliciously scented 100 percent lavander sachets.

Delectable treats from Black Jet Baking Co.

Dostoevsky Wooden Stencil by The Lamplighters. Use as a stencil or hang on the wall as art.

Locally made from organic ingredients, soap and soy candles (the wax becomes massage oil) by Heliotrope.

Recyclable and reusable cardboard Christmas trees that you decorate yourself from The Arbory.

We may not have falling snow, but San Francisco will see flurries of fashionable events this week, the last truly action-packed one on the calendar before folks quiet down to enjoy the holidays. Trunk shows, a boutique crawl, fashion photo fun and plenty of chances to shop local await. As always, you’ll find the details on many great upcoming San Francisco fashion and style events on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar. We’ve called out a few of our favorites below.

  • Travel and style converge on Monday night at Jackson Square’s La Boutique during a Bon Voyage for the Holidays party featuring local designer Jennifer Bennett’s Jendarling line of travel accessories alongside travel and wine tips from Gigi of Giannabocci.com and La Boutique’s Je Ne Sais Quois.

The Do List: San Francisco Fashion Events Oct. 3-9

Fashion fans in San Francisco will find a diverse style spread ahead this week. A sustainable design meeting of the minds, a new pop-up shop, paintings of dresses and an outdoor shopping event featuring tons of local designers are all on the horizon. Intrigued? You’ll find the details on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

  • Get the week going with a special event from The Commonwealth Club’s Inforum and Levi’s. In 6 Minutes, 40 Seconds: How to Design a Sustainable Future dives into one of the biggest design-driven questions of our time with a lightening-fast pecha kucha presentation featuring Rickshaw Bagworks CEO Mark Dwight and Flora Grubb of Flora Grubb Gardens, among others. Networking and ping pong follow.
  • Thursday night brings a sweet little soiree at Marmalade. Head to Hope’s Cow Hollow shop for Cocktails, Big Sales and Fashionable Art featuring artist Megan Martin’s dress paintings, as well as drinks and discounts.
  • Finish off the week by shopping independent at the year’s last outdoor Indie Mart, where you’ll find over 100 independent designers selling their work. Other perks: it’s outside, there’s a BBQ, lots of beer and more than solid people watching.

We Came, We Saw, We Shopped: Indie Mart

A gorgeous sunny summer Sunday, a slew of designers and a crowd hungry for beer and D.I.Y. set the stage for last weekend’s Indie Mart at Thee Parkside in lower Potrero. After an eight-month hiatus, the well-attended event, a fundraiser for founder Kelly Malone’s ongoing cancer treatments, was back with gusto and a serious assortment of independent designers displaying their latest.

We strolled through the outdoor market, past groups eagerly hovering over the make-your-own terrarium table and digging into locally-made edibles near the entrance, to find a pop-up from on-the-move shop Shotwell, new work from designer Mariele Williams, a selection of super bargain-priced samples from Turk + Taylor, cute onesies and tees from Animal Instincts, tribal necklaces from Rachael Kinsey Designs and striking steel earrings from Push Pull Designs, among many others.

Below, a few pics from our adventure.

Mariele Williams shows off accessories from her Mariele Ivy line.

Williams creates necklaces, headpieces and earrings that combine natural materials, chains and antique sensibilities.

Notably on-trend for fall, tribal elements were easy to spot in jewelry from Rachel Kinsey Designs.

While prepping for its new space to open, Shotwell brought a selection of offerings, including lots of vintage pieces, to the event.

As for the new location's opening date, we were told it could be any moment, though there is still some building out to do. So keep your eyes trained on the shop's Facebook page if you're one of the many waiting with baited breath.

Animal Instincts owner Jamai Lowell with his apparel line featuring original sketches, many of which include San Francisco icons. As you might guess, we're big fans of the Sutro design and its "play locally" missive.

The Turk + Taylor crew: designers Mark Lee Morris and Andrew Soernsen with friend Camilla Thompson.

Jewelry from Push Pull Designs achieves its bright-meets-rugged look by using pigment and rust on thin steel shapes.
