We were pleased to get a sneak peek at the fall 2010 collection from Bay Area handbag line Helena de Natalio, founded by former Peace Corps volunteer Helen Lubetkin after an assignment in South America prompted a love affair with the leather work she discovered there.

The latest from this local designer continues the ever-so-slightly bohemian take on classic shapes the label is known for, but updates offerings for fall with spicy new hues, edgy metallics and details such as braided straps and tassels.

You’ll find current styles at Saks Fifth Avenue and online in shops like Bluefly.com. Or peruse the line in person during the upcoming Sassy City Chicks sample sale in San Francisco on March 18.

We’ll have more for you soon on this fab new boutique (it opened yesterday) from local artist and designer Tedda Hughes, but in the meantime, we recommend putting this party on your list for Saturday night. Last weekend, we got a sneak preview of the store and its enviable inventory of finds from such independent designers as Helena de Natalio, She-Bible and Atsuko Kudo – and we have no doubt that this will fast become one of the go-to spots on our list….stay tuned for more.

Fresh Face: Helena De Natalio

Halloween is hardly the only reason to dress up this week. On Thursday, Gen Art presents its annual Fresh Faces in Fashion event featuring some of the best up-and-coming fashion and accessories designers the Bay Area has to offer.

Among them is Helena de Natalio, a luxury handbag line from Orinda-based designer and former Peace Corps volunteer Helen Hoppock. Created in conjunction with artisans in Argentina, where Hoppock lived after a two-year stint in Paraguay, the handcrafted leather bags pair a slouchy, bohemian breeziness with forshion-forward hardware and thoughtful details like cell phone pockets and key chains.

While we know plenty of you will have the chance to feast your eyes on these buttery leather beauties in person on Thursday night, here are a few images of Hoppock’s best-sellers: the Giselle clutch, shown above, and the Sofi bag, pictured below.
