New & Local: gr.dano Spring 2013

San Francisco’s gr.dano recently dropped images of its forthcoming Spring 2013 collection on the media, and we were glad to finally be able to share news of the design duo’s latest with readers. During a sneak peek of the collection a few weeks back, it was lovely to see new adventures in texture, color and draping appearing in the spring line alongside the label’s signature embrace of structural details, neutral hues and versatile shapes.

When the collection hits stores next year (440 Brannan Studio being the go-to place to find the line in San Francisco), expect to find plenty of the drapey details, solid colors, all-occasion dresses and skirts gr.dano has turned out in previous seasons. But along with these, you’ll also spot the label extending its aesthetic into new territory. The results are several pieces in a striking maize hue, prints with ethnic and tribal undertones, a playful romper in sophisticated stripes and – a favorite – a cropped lace jacket with a deep scoop-v front (above left).

As for designers Brian Scheyer and Jill Giordano, we hear they’re already thinking Fall 2013 from the subterranean studio they run in the back of 440 Brannan.

Oh My Guinness: gr.dano Fall/Winter ’12

A brand new reason to look forward to the latter half of the year came this week when much-loved independent San Francisco fashion label gr.dano dropped shots of its latest collection on us. With the gr.dano Fall/Winter ’12 collection, prepare for the same sophisticated draping and architectural details designers Jill Giordano and Brian Scheyer are known for, but with a youthful edge and pops of color that provide a refreshing departure from their previous work. The inspiration? The iconic Daphne Guinness.

Pieces ranging from work-appropriate pants and skirts to edgier pieces with cut-out shoulders aim to channel the “unique boldness, agelessness, glamour and confidence” Guinness is known for, Giordano and Scheyer say, while sticking to the wearable, predominately neutral-hued roots of the brand. Among our favorite are a white, belted jacket with futuristic undertones, a long belted dress with long sleeves and a dramatic v-neck and an asymmetrical top with a drapey neckline.

Stone Sophisticate: gr.dano Spring/Summer 2012

For Spring/Summer 2012, San Francisco’s gr.dano embraces its roots with a collection that relies on neutral hues and structural details in easy-to-wear silhouettes that manage to be relaxed, yet supremely polished.

During a recent conversation, the 440 Brannan-based design team’s Brian Scheyer described the latest from gr.dano as something of a return to the essence of what the label has always been about after a few seasons experimenting with color and shape. Now that we’ve seen the images of what’s ahead for spring, it’s easy to understand what he was getting at. He and Jill Giordano have combined textured fabrics ranging from modern chain maille knit and wrinkled nylon to classic seersucker into a series of everyday wearables featuring tucks, draping, folds and overlays that bring visual interest and surprises to the mostly gray, white and black collection.

The inspiration? The Textile Stone series by Danish Artist Pernelle.

Scheyer tells us:

“The natural color palette combined with its sculptural and unpretentious energy led gr.dano to design a collection of relaxed sophistication that is both recognizable and
refreshingly distinct.”

Where to find it this spring: boutiques around the country or at 440 Brannan St. in San Francisco.

Structure & Stripes: gr.dano Fall 2011

The Fall/Winter 2011 collection from San Francisco-based gr.dano continues the design duo’s emphasis on architectural silhouettes and neutral hues with two-toned tops, cropped jackets and lots of structural details, folds and stripes. While the results are nothing if not modern, designers Jill Giordano and Brian Scheyer looked to the past for inspiration, which came courtesy of this year’s much-lauded Balenciaga & Spain exhibit at the de Young Museum.

“Both Balenciaga and Spain have always had one foot in the ultra-modern and the other in a space dedicated to reverence to the past. This season gr.dano strived for the same result,” the gr.dano team says of their latest work.

The feminine, yet groundbreaking shapes of Balenciaga and elements of Spanish culture ranging from midday siestas to the masculinity of the matador and the sensuality of the Flamenco were just some of the ideas the designers kept in mind as they produced their latest pieces. – additional reporting by Lindsay Harte

The collection will be available later this year at 440 Brannan Studio. In the meantime, here are some highlights:
