The Do List: San Francisco Fashion Events Aug. 22-28

This week, a long-awaited runway fashion event, Pinterest meet-up, fair trade shopping bazaar and an annual awards ceremony feting the local fashion community are here to get you out and about in independent, consciously-consumerist style. You’ll find the details on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

  • If you’re stuck on Pinterest, head east on Thursday to mingle IRL with likeminded pinners during the Bay Area Pinterest Meet-Up taking place at the Emeryville West Elm. We hear there will be deals to be had, but the real reason to go is putting faces with the names of your favorite Bay Area boards.
  • Shopping fair trade becomes an experience in the arts during the Fine Arts Museums’ Fair Trade Bazaar at the de Young. Head over on Friday and Saturday for jewelry, textiles and decorative accessories made by artisans from around the world.
  • Saturday night brings The Collection, the San Francisco Bay Area Fashion Network’s long-anticipated runway event featuring local names Daniel Sudar, Acta Non Verba and Joseph Domingo in three separate runway shows spanning the afternoon and evening. Set in the slick surroundings of the British Motor Car venue, the fashion shows start at 4 p.m. Proceeds from the event benefit nonprofit Dress for Success.
  • Come Sunday, party by the pool at the Hotel Phoenix in celebration of the local fashion scene during the San Francisco Fashion Awards, an annual event presented by Del Geronimo that highlights designers, models, makeup artists, bloggers, fashion show producers and others involved in Bay Area fashion throughout the year.

You can find details on all of these events and more happening this week on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

The Do List: San Francisco Fashion Events July 5-10

Good golly, sneaky-fast summer, how did it get to be July? Probably something to do with all the stylish adventures afoot. You’ll find this week’s top San Francisco fashion events on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar, and we’ve called out a few favorites below.

  • A reason to venture to the Inner Sunset arrives on Saturday, when SET Boutique brings its summer collection to Urban Bazaar’s garden for a Fair Trade Fashion Garden Party. You’ll find summer looks on display during the 1:30 p.m. fashion show from ethical labels such as Mata Traders and Alternative Apparel, as well as light food and drinks.
  • We’re always excited at the return of the massive Renegade Craft Fair, which takes over Fort Mason this weekend. With over 200 artists touting innovative crafts, fashion and handmade accessories, the event is a browser’s dreamland. Workshops, booze, food and a free photo booth only make it better.
  • Should you fancy a drive north, the charming town of Petaluma beckons with a grand opening party for the new boutique from designer Robindira Unsworth, whose bohemian-gone-glam baubles are found in stores such as Anthropologie and Neiman Marcus.

You can find details on all of these events and more happening this week on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

January flew by, and this week lands us firmly in February 2011. How we ever got this far, we haven’t a clue. Good thing the SF Indie Fashion Calendar is always full of events to keep San Francisco fashion lovers busy with trunk sales, beauty happenings, fashion shows and places to shop from independent sources. Here’s our pick of top San Francisco fashion events this week:

  • Unlike most weeks, this one has not one, but two notable happenings on usually-quiet Monday night. As designer Joui Turandot prepares to move on to new pursuits and a new styling business, she is holding a closing party to bid adieu to her eco-friendly clothing label Vagadu. Stop by her studio for up to 50 percent off her one-of-a-kind clothing, as well as fabric freebies and some additional surprises (we hear those include celebratory singing and some bubbly).
  • Also on Monday, another eco-minded style diversion is a draw in SoMa, where local non-profit Global Action Through Fashion presents an evening on Fair Trade that includes speakers Jeff Denby of PACT Underwear, Tierra Del Forte of Del Forte Denim fame and Fair Trade USA, and Matt Reynolds and Scott Leopold of Indigenous Designs. It’s a chance to learn more about Fair Trade issues surrounding apparel production from some of the most prominent Bay Area players in the field.
  • On Thursday night, it’s your chance to get crafty with your Valentine’s Day to-do list during the monthly Craft Bar with Etsy Labs event at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art, during which you’ll be able to make cards and envelopes (provided by local stationary company Hello Lucky) embellished with the help of letterpress printing courtesy of the San Francisco Center for the Book and pop-artist Sister Corita’s iconic love-themed images.
  • Saturday marks the opening of the much-anticipated Legion of Honor exhibition Pulp Fashion: The Art of Isabelle de Borchgrave, on view in San Francisco through June 5. The first American museum exhibit of the Belgian artist’s work, the show features de Borchgrave’s elaborate dresses constructed entirely of hand-painted paper. Included are gowns inspired by early European and Renaissance-era dress, as well as more contemporary examples that draw from famous couturiers such as Christian Dior and Coco Chanel.

You can find details on all of these events and more happening this week on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

Green Chic: Oakland’s Zelaya

zelaya-clutch

We’ve been intrigued by the fair trade clothing, handbags and accessories from Oakland-based Zelaya ever since an SF Indie Fashion friend (thanks, Jamie!) brought them to our attention after a visit to last month’s Feria Urbana.

Along with the sweetly simple silhouettes of the tops, skirts, dresses and handbags quietly adorned with artfully-constructed details such as the fabric flower on the Flora Clutch shown here and delicate webs of fabric leaves, we dig the line’s commitment to sustainable, renewable materials and socially-conscious labor practices. You’ll find garments made of raw cotton manta fabric sourced from El Salvador and creative alternatives to traditional fastening methods used instead of plastic buttons and metal zippers.

Buy online via Brooklyn-based Supermarket, shop Zelaya on etsy, or head to Perch to find Zelaya within city limits.
