Runway Recap: Charity Fashion Show 2011

It took Fort Mason’s Festival Pavilion in San Francisco to hold the 40 local and national designers, models and approximately 1,200 guests who turned up for last Saturday’s Charity Fashion Show.

Dubbed as the largest fashion show on the West Coast, local and independent labels such as Anya Tatarenko, Kittinhawk and Ragdoll presented their latest alongside spring offerings from major brands such as Gap and Tracy Reese to benefit The Princess Project, an organization that provides prom dresses to girls in need.

“When we heard that it was moving to Fort Mason, we just knew this was going to be huge. This is a huge event. It’s for a good cause. I couldn’t think of anything better,” said Frock LA CEO and designer Victoria Tik, who presented two collections emphasizing clean, minimalist designs and long, lean silhouettes.

Before attendees could see the many models strut down the aisle (which was about half the length of a football field), flocks of well-dressed guests mingled in the sponsor’s room, where they sipped free samples of local wines, indulged in Sprinkles cupcakes, posed for photos in front of backdrops and stopped by local designer booths such as Stella & Dot and San Franpsycho, who screenprinted shirts on the spot.

The show began with a video about The Princess Project and was followed soon after by local Oakland designer Ahr.es.ihm, who showcased designs of beaded floral prints and bright colored gowns. Other notables from the evening included Ragdoll’s latest wedding collection of textured, draped white lace gowns inspired by the Victorian era.

Mixed between our beloved homegrown designers were big time names like Gap and Nicole Richie’s line, Winter Kate, as well as Antik Batik designs from as far away as Paris, France.

I Fell in Love With Lenny

The best part of Charity Fashion Show 2011 was watching New York label, Lenny swimwear march down the “runway.” It was a highlight with sophisticated patterns complimented with beige and black hats a la Audrey Hepburn. The crowd that wasn’t taking a break from the two hour performance was delightfully alert as soon as the camo-colored green one pieces and zebra print suits appeared in sight. These bathing suits are grown up without being boring and made me happy to be in my late 20′s.  To you I say this Lenny, thank you for being in my life Saturday night, you made the trek out to Fort Mason worth it.

The Do List: San Francisco Fashion Events March 28-April 3

Fashion for a good cause dominates the SF Indie Fashion Calendar in the days and weeks ahead. Read on for the details on two fund-raising fashion shows this week, as well as our regular weekly dose of trunk sales, beauty happenings and opps to shop from independent sources in San Francisco:

  • Ethical fashion is the topic of the night during an Global Action Through Fashion event on Tuesday at SoMa’s The Hub. Green Content in Online Media features speakers from Ecofabulous and EcoSalon in a panel discussion focused on the many ways online media can be used to educate consumers about ethical fashion choices and eco-minded fashion industry innovations.
  • On Thursday, the official opening party for Sui Generis Illa Boutique brings a chance to sip bubbly while commiserating with other fans of the shop’s high-end consignment and apparel by emerging labels. We hear the top dandy of them all, Patrick McDonald, will be making an appearance at the sure-to-be-fun fete.
  • Also on Thursday, Appel & Frank Spring into Style brings a chance to scoop up locally-made apparel and accessories from 65+ vendors, indulge in mini beauty treatments and – hilariously enough – meet David Good and Jesse Kovacs of ABC’s The Bachelor Pad (whose group kissing challenge brought reality TV to new levels of germ-sharing last fall). The boys will be there signing their books. Attendees receive a free glass of wine and a gift bag. SF Indie Fashion readers can save 20 percent on the ticket price (reg. $10) with the discount code appelandfrank20 when they purchase advance tickets. We’ve also got a few pairs of free passes to give away, so be sure to check our Facebook page and Twitter for those this week.
  • Once the weekend rolls around, you’ve got two chances to enjoy fashion for a good cause. Billed as the largest fashion show on the West Coast, Charity Fashion Show relocates to San Francisco from Stanford for the first time this year. Benefiting the Princess Project, the show features apparel from both mainstream (Gap, Milly, Tracy Reese) and emerging designers (Aksel Paris, Frock LA, Paul’s Hatworks) from the Bay Area and beyond. On the same night, the Give Back Gala raises funds for Career Closet and Women Inc with a dinner, silent auction and fashion show featuring FIDM alums such as Ericka Engelman and RockChiq’s Indu Arora.

You can find details on all of these events and more happening this week on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

Campus Chic: Charity Fashion Show

charity-fashion-show-2010

We don’t know about you, but we’re all for fashion on a grand scale. Hence our excitement over this weekend’s Charity Fashion Show, billed as the largest fashion show on the West Coast.

Held annually on the Stanford University campus in front of a crowd that approached 2,000 last year, the event is a student-produced, charitable event featuring professional and emerging designers. Among the notable labels participating in this year’s show are Betsey Johnson, Nanette Lepore, Priestess NYC, Tosca Soraya, Kent Denim and Shin Choi. Followers of the Bay Area fashion scene will recognize plenty of local names, including Alexandria von Bromssen, Kitty Andrews, Paul’s Hatworks and Isharya. Proceeds from this year’s show benefit micro-finance non-profit Kiva.

If this year’s show is anything like the inaugural show last May, expect a huge tent and impressive raised runway to showcase the collections, which varied in size from designer to designer, but on average numbered around eight to 12 pieces each.

For a taste of what’s ahead on Saturday, check out our videos from the 2009 Charity Fashion Show.
