Runway Recap: CCA Fashion Show 2011

Convertible bike purse by Haley Toelle

At last week’s California College of the Arts 2011 annual fashion show, students’ design creativity was on display as graduating seniors presented looks ranging from the functional to the feminine, with sheer fabrics and asymmetrical one-shoulder pieces appearing in more than one collection.

Fashion show sponsor Surface magazine presented two awards at the end of the evening. Surface Designer of the Year went to Patricia Lucia Arroyo, who stole quite a bit of the audience’s attention with a sexy dress draped in chains. Johnny Paul Vera, with his bold and sheer feminine suits, took Surface’s second award, a New York City internship with Nicole Miller.

An opening segment, titled ‘Fashion Functional Gear’, came started the show with a wow-inducing its first piece, a slick convertible bike purse by Haley Toelle. The segment showed pieces from a class devoted to blending fashion and industrial design. Sustainability was another demonstrated theme, thanks to the use of natural and organic fabrics in many student pieces.

The Do List: San Francisco Fashion Events May 9-15

A look by CCA alum Laura Schmits shown during the 2010 fashion show.

It’s a quieter week in the local, independent fashion landscape than we’ve seen lately, so good thing the events on the horizon are promising ones. For the detes, we turn to the SF Indie Fashion Calendar, where you’ll find a solution for those in need of summer fashion internships, a longtime local designer’s spring collection viewing party and another annual student fashion show.

  • Interested getting more involved in the local fashion community, participating in upcoming shows or finding a fashion internship in San Francisco? Wednesday’s Portfolio Night and Open Calls at Pigment Cosmetics is a meetup for industry folks and the organizers behind such events as the upcoming Beauty Expo and San Francisco Fashion Week. They’ll be reviewing portfolios, talking to potential interns and having an open call for talent in a casual, workshop-like setting.
  • Continuing the spring student fashion show season, Friday brings the annual California College of the Arts Fashion Show, a runway event featuring the work of the school’s graduating seniors in an exhibition tent on the Eighth Street campus. Tickets, $30 and up.

You can find details on all of these events and more happening this week on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.
