Introducing SF’s First Fashion Blogger Runway Show

San Francisco will see it’s very first fashion show featuring fashion bloggers instead of models this weekend during the 3rd annual Beauty Expo, a competitive showcase of Bay Area styling and beauty talent produced by the San Francisco Fashion and Merchants Alliance. Read on for more detes and how to win tickets to this local fashion event.

Hosted by Charleston Pierce, the evening derives its main drama from a style-off featuring competing teams made up of hair and makeup pros culled from Bay Area salons and beauty schools. A judges panel made up of Celebrity Stylist Antonio Venegas, former model Joyce Hu of The Bookr, Stylist Dario Smith of Bellwether Project and Gwendolyn Wright of The Wright Consultants will decide the winners.

The evening will be capped off by a fashion show with bloggers as models, including Jules Vasic of The Green Stylist, Alison Messinger of Eclectic à la Mode and Lona Duncan of Lux Resale – each in apparel by designer Jennifer Ly.

Other reasons to go: A chance to mingle with participating designers and folks from sponsor companies such as Styletag, Fizz Marketing, Punchtab, Shopience, Intern Sushi, Wella, AskASalon.com, The Brush Guard, Pigment Cosmetics, Rodan+Fields, Seacret SF, WorkPlayDate, Bachman’s Sparrow and Chloe+Isabel.

Want in? We’ll be giving away tickets later this week, so follow us on Twitter @sfindiefashion or visit our Facebook page. That’s where it will all go down.

Charleston Pierce Tells Us How to Make it as a Model

Charleston Pierce leading Model Bootcamp at the Beauty Expo

There are three genres of models: high fashion, commercial and lifestyle. While few make it to the level of high fashion, fashion show producer and modeling expert Charleston Pierce says opportunities are out there for every model—no matter shape, height or age—who knows the rules of the game.

A 20-year veteran of the fashion industry, Pierce teaches a class in modeling and recently held a Model Boot Camp session during the San Francisco Fashion and Merchants Alliance Beauty Expo 2011. To be successful in the model business, Pierce said, you have to follow a few guidelines. Here are five key steps Pierce offered up that every aspiring model can use to further his or her career:

#1 Do your homework.

Research and study model poses to practice at home. Just like a university student trying to earn a degree, models need to continuously study their craft in order to perfect it.

#2 Always be prepared.

Be prepared to pose on a moment’s notice. If a potential agency asks you to show them a graceful ostrich trying to find a mate in the middle of winter, don’t make excuses—do the best you can and commit to it.

# 3 Keep it simple.

Modeling is about the product, not the person. Too much animation is a distraction clients are not interested in keeping around, so cut it out of the routine. Connecting with the audience is one of the most important things to selling a product, and it’s hard to concentrate when a model is flailing about the runway. Learn how to create magic on stage without doing so much.

#4  Network, network, network.

Find someone more experienced and partner up, because the people you know can take you places. It takes courage to ask for help when needed, and the more people you meet, the farther up the ladder you will climb.

#5  Understand the power of good exposure

Everyone needs to pay bills, but if Elle offers to do a cover shoot without a currency exchange, you take it. The exposure from one big-nam job can generate enough buzz to pay off in the long run.

Video: Origami Wins at Beauty Expo Style Competition

To go from the shower to runway-ready in anything less than an hour should be declared an art. But the six teams in the SFFMA’s recent Beauty Expo Style Competition had just 30 minutes to create high-drama looks.

When the time was up, Sophia Guerra and Kelli Eng from Rockridge’s Lucero Hair Salon took home a cash prize with their Japanese street style-inspired look, complete with origami paper cranes they folded on the ride over.

The competition was just one element of the four-hour event from the San Francisco Fashion Merchants Alliance. Hosted by Pigment Cosmetics on Saturday, May 28, the evening also included opportunities to connect with local fashion bloggers and attend a model boot-camp session with veteran model coach Charleston Pierce.

RSVP in advance, as space is limited. Do it for your ‘do.
  • We love equal opportunity shopping opps. Hence our laser-like focus on Thursday’s Martha Davis Shopping Party at Cow Hollow boutique Conifer. During the event, the local shoe designer presents her line of loafers made for men and women, and shoppers will receive 10 percent off Martha Davis shoes.
  • The weekend is packed with fashionable events. First up, Treasure Island Flea opens for the first time on, you guessed it, Treasure Island. Bloggers such as Nicole Lindgren of Style Bust and Alison Messinger of Eclectic à la Mode will discuss blogging and social media, Charleston Pierce hosts a model bootcamp and seven teams will compete in styling competition whose judges include Greg Griffin of Barber Lounge, Brad Carrick of Solz Shoes, Mario Benton and Amy Soderlind of Refuses To Label.
  • Cap off Saturday night by reveling at the 13th anniversary of Chillin’ Productions, featuring work from 80 independent fashion and accessories designers and 200 artists inside the cavernous confines of SoMa’s mezzanine. Live painting, live screenprinting, a slew of DJs and video installations add to the event’s let-loose-and-party vibe.

You can find details on all of these events and more happening this week on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.
