Maximize Summer with These Lovely Local Maxi Skirts

Let your hem down with the summer wardrobe essential: a maxi skirt. We’ve found some of the chicest locally-designed skirts to spruce up your closet.

Marine Layer‘s basic women’s skirt, $70, wraps a slew of neutral tones into one piece. A contrasting vertical back hem in black adds some sporty pizazz.

Curator‘s Claudine Skirt, $75, is the perfect balance of length and utility. A tie waist adds femininity, while the eco-friendly fabric keeps it in the sustainable style realm. Even better, this organic cotton maxi’s a deal: it’s currently on sale.

Alyssa Nicole‘s Accordion Pleat Maxi Skirt, $48, adds a feminine touch with its vertical pleats. Another plus: the textured maxi is also handmade.

Amour Vert‘s Mia striped maxi, $104, flatters the body with well-placed diagonal stripes. Its hidden pockets and ec0-friendly modal fabric make it a super soft and comfy winner.

Saffron Rare Threads now has a multi-print maxi skirt, $88, that looks like a piece of modern art.  The bold print will add flair to any outfit.

What do cupcakes, fixed gear-riding hipsters, punk rock and the color pink have in common? On the face of it, not much. But in the mind of 18-year-old San Francisco designer Alyssa Casares, they’re altogether fitting friends. Each was a source of inspiration in the spring 2010 collection of pretty skirts and party dresses Casares creates under the label Alyssa Nicole.

“It’s edgy and sweet,” she says of her latest designs’ look.

With a recent WWD mention and a bevy of new looks in her online shop, Casares balances work, school and her burgeoning business as stylishly as she can. The new spring offerings comprise the sixth collection from Casares, who began sewing as a tween and never looked back.

“When I was 16 I designed my first collection and when people started to notice what I could do, they would ask me to design for them. When I began to sell custom dresses, I received a lot of positive feedback and realized it didn’t have to be just a hobby,” she tell us.

Along with custom designs upon request, Casares makes each dress she sells online according to customers’ measurements. Garments take between one and three weeks to complete. Prices range from $25 for a simple halter-neck sundress to $250 for the party dresses with full tulle skirts available in the Alyssa Nicole etsy shop.

Feelgood Fashion: DNA Holiday Pop-Up Shop

DNA-Holiday-Pop-Up-Shop

Tomorrow at Space Gallery, the DNA Holiday Pop-Up Shop returns with lovely local fashion and a great cause. Vendors such as Paola Loves to Shop and designers Alyssa Bird and Pretty Little Thing will be offering up their wares alongside a bake sale benefiting St. Anthony’s Foundation.

All participating designers and bakers are donating 10 percent of the day’s proceeds to the San Francisco charity, and they needn’t act alone: bring a warm coat or blankets in good condition to the event, and the event organizers will deliver them to St. Anthony’s.
