SF Fashion Events: 3 Fashion Shows, Urban Air Market + More

If you like a session beside the runway, this week’s for you. The only problem: a trio of worthy shows on the same night. We’ll let you decide how to fill up your dance card. Will it be the invite-only Academy of Art Fashion Show (there’s a public repeat on Sunday, though minus the presence of special guest such as Alexander McQueen’s Sara Burton), Runway 2012: Defined featuring San Francisco State University graduating designers’ collections or Bianca Starr’s Spring Forward Fashion Show with apparel from Wonderland, Sui Generis, Density Dept and Top Shelf? While you’re figuring that one out, look ahead to the weekend, when you’ll have the chance to engage in more independent fashion adventures during the return of Artwear at the de Young and Urban Air Market.

We’re adding new fashion happenings all the time. Find details on these and other upcoming San Francisco fashion events waiting on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

4 Reasons for Locals to Love New York Fashion Week

Once again Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is fast approaching and come February 9, the usual slew of designers will showcase their fall collections in New York at the Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park. Even if you’re not one of the many Bay Area-ites jet-setting over to New York, keep some champagne on hand, as several local companies are live-streaming fashion week events. Here are 4 reasons San Franciscans can start getting excited for the fury that is NYFW:

1. Independent Fashion Blogger Conference, February 8, 2012 at Milk Studios, NYC

IFB Conference 2012

IFB Con 2012 takes places on Feb. 8 in New York

For evidence that fashion bloggers have become a marketing force to be reckoned with, watch the IFB Conference live. You’ll spot some of the fashion industry’s best and brightest personalities come together to discuss issues, challenges and  trends facing fashion bloggers and the brands they work with, as well as the changing the landscape of fashion and social media today.

2. Polyvore LIVE presented by CoverGirl , February 13, 2012 at La. Venue, NYC

Polyvore LIVE

Polyvore LIVE is being billed as the world's first fashion show by an online fashion community.

Polyvore, an online community that promotes the “democracy of fashion,” is showcasing four alumni collections by graduates of the Fashion Institute of Technology. Instead of a flurry of fashion models strutting down the catwalk, the collections will be modeled by a select group of fashion bloggers, who will be announced one week prior to the show on polyvore.com.

3. Academy of Art MFA Fashion Show,  February 10, 2012 at The Lincoln Center.

On Feb. 10, San Francisco’s own Academy of Art showcases the collections of its best M.F.A. fashion design graduates. It is the only fashion school to show at NYFW, and, last year, three students took home Council of Fashion Designers of America scholarships. Make sure not to miss these talented up-and-coming designers: the Academy of Art Fashion Show livestream starts at 5 p.m. on Feb. 10.

4. BlacMéra by Yuliana Candra at Couture Fashion Week, February 17, 2012 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

http://blacmera.com/

Designers displaying the highest level of American craftsmanship in apparel showcase at Couture Fashion Week, and we are absolutely thrilled that San Francisco based designer Yuliana Candra is showing her brand, BlacMéra. A sight to behold, Candra’s gowns impress with hand embroidery, beading and crystal work, while her silk tunics are hand-painted, layer by layer, with depictions of images Candra’s shot on her travels around the world. While this is the only event on our list that is not streamed live, couture fans can view images from the web that are sure to be uploaded by the fleet of smart phones in attendance.

Now you have something more to look forward to than the usual online blow out of models, celebs and socialites running from show to show in designer duds. Happy #NYFW, San Francisco!

The Do List: San Francisco Fashion Events May 2-8

Dress by Amelia Statler from the 2010 Academy of Art University spring fashion show.

After you’ve figured out how to thank dear mom for all she’s done, there are plenty of ways to indulge in local fashion this week. For that, we turn to the SF Indie Fashion Calendar. In the days ahead, we’ll be prepping for a fun night of wearable crafting, a Berkeley trunk show at and a much-anticipated annual student fashion showcase.

  • The week stays relatively quiet until Thursday, when you can head to the monthly installment of the etsy Craft Bar at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art. During the evening event, learn how to screenprint imagery by featured artist Sister Corita onto posters, t-shirts and tote bags.
  • On Friday and Saturday, scope out wearable art during the de Young Museum’s ARTWEAR event taking place all day in the Piazzoni Murals Room. You’ll find textile art, apparel and jewelry on offer from such artists as Judith Content, Angelina DeAntonis, Carol Lee Shanks, Jenne Giles, Alice Roche, Ava Austin, Marna Clark and Reiko Miyagi.
  • The Rue Atelier Mother’s Day Trunk Show offers a reason to head east on Saturday. The Berkeley boutique will be hosting Bay Area designer Maureen Dougherty and her sustainable apparel line, as well as San Francisco jewelry designer Stephanie Arata. Sustainable wine and vegan snacks are an added draw.
  • Also on Saturday, the Academy of Art University welcomes the public to its annual Spring Fashion Show, featuring collections from graduating students. Always a polished show, the event offers an opportunity to view inventive apparel by young talents – for free. But here’s the rub: seating is first-come, first-served, and the house is usually packed. So if you want in, we’d recommend heading down to the school’s Brannan Street tent well in advance of the 2 p.m. start time.

You can find details on all of these events and more happening this week on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

Super Seven: Academy of Art Spring 2011 Collections

First presented at New York Fashion Week, Spring 2011 collections from seven recent graduates of San Francisco-based Academy of Art University deliver fresh silhouettes from rising fashion talents. From Jungah Lee’s sophisticated, yet casual separates to opulently adorned pieces paired with lace from Maria Korovilas, this season’s collections not only display mastery of technique by seven designers at the beginning of their careers, but also add something new to the larger fashion conversation by showing that fashion can still push boundaries while remaining wearable.

Below, we feature one image from each collection, as well as an image from the print collaboration collection, also shown during Fashion Week:

5 Killer Looks: Academy of Art Spring 2010 Fashion Show

SoMa was bursting with San Francisco fashion fans on Thursday night, when the Academy of Art Graduation Fashion Show drew hundreds of invited guests to the school’s Brannan Street space for a runway show and awards ceremony featuring graduating students’ debut collections and special guests such as the International Herald Tribune’s Suzy Menkes, designer Patrick Ervell, Opening Ceremony founders Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, designer Walter Van Beirendonck and author Keanan Duffty, among others.

After shimmying through the VIP crowd gathered during the pre-show reception, we were pleased to settle into our seats and watch the show. This year’s collections stood out for their embrace of flat footwear (Oxfords and menswear-inspired variations dominated), innovative original prints and love affair with layering. Below, five looks we’d happily stare at again and again.

01a_RonnieOmarNery

Ronnie Omar Nery’s knit dress impressed with its surprisingly wearable use of neon and a shape that was both daringly sculpted, yet also figure-flattering. Nery was the recipient of a prestigious Studio Bercot scholarship.

01a_AmeliaStatler

Amelia Statler’s lace-filled collection was inspired by women of the 1920′s and 1930′s and paired complex construction (note the diagonal piecework on the top above) with flowing layers.

01a_YoungAeKoo

Young Ae Koo’s dizzying geometric knitwear looked crisp when paired with white tops, dark-rimmed glasses and flat lace-up shoes.

04a_StephanieHoffmann

Stephanie Hoffmann’s knits over leather-like leggings create a contrast that caught our eye. Next, we were drawn in by the sparkling beads sewn into her collection’s garments.

07a_EricJonasHolbrei23D624

Eric Jonas Holbreich’s use of Camille Bucu’s original prints resulted in silhouettes that were loose, yet not without structure. Muted tones balanced the interplay of pattern, while a pop from the brightly-hued socks featured in the collection kept our eyes roving from head to toe.
