Video: SF Indie Fashion Featured in MADE in SF Video Series

We were oh-so-honored to be included in Made Jewelry’s video series Made in SF. In episode three, SF Indie Fashion founder and editor Lorraine Sanders chats about San Francisco fashion, what she loves about the city and some of her favorite spots to shop.

Filmed earlier this summer, the series from Made Jewelry features visits with local fashion influencers, including Jenny Chung from Acrimony and Gabriel Garcia from BK Circus.

Enjoy these juicy little slices of local fashion footage. We sure did.

Video: Get the Right Fit at Eel and Ermine

Walk into into Eel and Ermine in Presidio Heights, and, unlike most boutiques, you’ll see the owners in action designing their own pieces from streamlined dresses with vintage fabric to boyfriend shirts with feminine touches amid earth-toned decor and furnishings and accessories they, for the most part, handcrafted themselves.

Owners Evelyne Aikman and Elinor Diamond both graduated with art degrees from separate schools and wondered, “Why don’t people make things anymore?” They answered their own question by opening their innovative, yet old-fashioned take on a clothing store, where they create simple and elegant designs and tailor them around their customer’s needs and desires.

“Being able to produce instead of consume all of the time…lets people see that ‘yes, you can make something, we’re making it right here.’ [It’s] kind of a nice way of getting things done and having things that you don’t necessarily have to buy from a huge chain store,” emphasizes Diamond, a San Francisco Art Institute alum.

Aikman and Diamond met each other decorating cakes at a shop in the city and later teamed up to find something more fulfilling. Together, they combined their E-lettered names and opened Eel and Ermine, a place where you can have well-tailored clothes at an affordable price while nibbling on homemade cakes and refreshments (their carrot cake is decadent).

On the racks, you can find well-designed dresses priced at an average of $100, fun skirts at around $60 and recycled t-shirts at a mere $25. Prices include free tailoring.

Aikman sums up why you should come get dressed at the shop: “You can get exactly what you want and something that fits you perfectly. It’s something you don’t have to order months in advance if you want a custom dress.”

Find your right fit at Eel and Ermine, 514 Presidio (between California and Pine) or online in their Etsy shop.

Beauty Fix: Tips from Janice Daoud

Janice_Daoud-2253-EditBy SF Indie Fashion Contributor Jessica Velez

Radiating from a bright naturally lit room on the 16th floor of Hotel Adagio in San Francisco, Nars Cosmetics National Trainer and stylist Janice Daoud applied make-up with pigmentations that match her bold signature cosmetic style during a recent event introducing local bloggers to the company’s latest products, including cream-textured eye shadows of sea-inspired blues to sheer, hot-off-the-runway coral lips.

If Daoud looks like Kim Kardashian’s SoCal cousin, there’s a reason. Along with an uncanny likeness to the starlet, Daoud also happens to be the starlet’s make-up artist. Despite her L.A. looks, she’s based in our foggy hills of San Francisco and has plenty of beauty advice for her fellow neighbors.

“Do a sheer foundation and just keep it very minimal for the San Francisco woman when’s she’s on the go and throw on a little bit of color going from day to night,” Daoud tells us.

But the most important advice she has is what we do before applying. “[San Franciscans] definitely need to hydrate their skin,” she says.

Living in the city, Daoud has noticed a colored eyeliner trend, but urges you to drop the color to your lips instead.

“I would love to see more of a bold lip come back,” Daoud says. To achieve this look, she suggests taking your favorite red lipstick, pressing it into your finger and gradually applying for luscious burgundy lips. Get all her advice by watching the video below.

Runway to Racks: Lorian Lindsay

In 48 hours’ time, we’ve seen the latest from Lorian Lindsay head down the runway and arrive on the racks in two San Francisco shops devoted to independent fashion. On Saturday night, Lindsay showed off her fall 2010 collection for the first time during A Night of Wine and Fashion at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Today, the San Francisco-based designer announced the arrival of her current season at 440 Brannan Studio and Wonderland, both of which offer a variety of apparel and accessories made by local labels.

During the Saturday evening event, we snagged Lindsay for a quick post-show chat.

“With each collection, I always start with vintage inspiration,” Lindsay tells us.

For fall, which the designer describes as “equestrian prairie,” expect more fitted jackets and ready-to-wear pieces that go from casual slacks and day dresses to a floor-length evening gown.

While you’ll have to wait a few months to feast your eyes on the fall line, you can get a sneak peek by checking out what went down the runway on Saturday in the short video below.
