Summer’s here and so are a slew of new men’s shoe styles perfect for the warmer months ahead. After emerging from the dull slog of winter, it’s all about lightweight kicks in seasonal hues.

For that we turn to UK retailer JD Sports for a Summer Shoe Guide featuring men’s footwear ideal for strolling the city streets, sitting in the sun and enjoying the summer months. Read on for Fashionable Footwear from JD Sports you won’t want to miss:

1. The Duffer of St. George mid-top. When the sun heats up, we love the look of this crisp white kick. Featuring a full canvas upper, padded ribbed ankle, metallic lace eyelets, metallic button on the ankle and double-stitch detailing throughout, these slick trainers keep it simple while remaining stylish.

2. adidas Nizza Hi Zip. Incorporate classic sneaker style into your summer wardrobe with this pair from the adidas Originals line. Featuring a full leather upper with three-stripe branding on the sides, this shoe stands out thanks to its contrast zip fasten heel accent and double stitch detailing throughout.

3. Nike Toki. For an athletic-minded take on casual footwear, try the men’s Toki, which pairs a chunky white midsole with textured mudguard and striped detailing with a full canvas upper, padded ankle support, Swoosh branding on the heel tip and sides and double stitching highlighting the side panel. For summer, we dig this shoe in the metallic silver/summit white color combination, but you’ll also find it available in black, blue and other colors.

4. The Duffer of St. George Flare. For the most casual summer days, this JD Sports exclusive bring a fashion-forward twist to classic men’s espadrilles, thanks to an all-canvas upper with a tucked toe styling, tonal paneling throughout and a contrasting midsole with a woven brand tab on the heel to finish. This is the pair of slip-ons to take with you whenever you escape the city (or just want to feel like it).

Sponsor Love: Retro Style Lives On

Obsessed with retro style? You’re not alone. Many designers, fashion enthusiasts and shoppers will find that their style and tastes may be shaped by eras in history. In fact, it is common for designers, in particular, to look to the past to create the designs of the future. Some of today’s most influential designers have turned to the past for inspiration.

It’s perhaps no wonder they do this: if you look at the fashion of the past, there is an abundance to draw influence from. Not surprisingly, the 60′s and 70′s are decades that people turn to time and time again, and both decades featured some truly diverse and unforgettable trends. Read on for a quick look at a few of those stand-out moments.

We can’t really talk about the sixties without mentioning Mary Quant. She famously invented the mini skirt, as well as hot pants. The influence which she had over what people at that time were wearing was certainly significant, and the impact can still be seen within the fashion industry today.

If you take a look at By Malene Birger, you can certainly see the way in which some design shapes and features from this era have lasted. In the sixties, the clothes were the most important part of an outfit (rather than the accessories), and this is something you can still see in collections that have been directly influenced by this period of time. Of course, having said this, the pillbox hat which was first worn by Jackie Kennedy in 1963 was a huge hit amongst fashion fans.

The 70s were equally as exciting. It was all about bell bottoms and creating an androgynous hippie-inspired look, with both the men and women stepping out in platform shoes, for example. The term ‘disco look’ was also coined during this time. For men, this meant wearing a three-piece suit, while women often donned wrap-around rayon or jersey dresses. The wrap-around dress, which is still hugely popular today, was first designed by Diane von Fürstenberg. Another popular item in the 70′s was high-waisted jeans, which you may have also noticed making a comeback recently. Fashion during this 60s and 70s was undoubtedly influenced by the rock stars of the time. Take David Bowie, Roxy Music and Marc Bolan, who all dressed in a style now referred to as ‘glam rock’. In order to achieve this look, both men and women tended to wear a lot of glitter. In addition to this, women would also wear high-waisted, flared trousers, often made from a satin material. These trousers would typically be teamed with halter neck tops, antique velvet dresses or sequined bra-tops. Bianca Jagger was someone who captured this look perfectly.

Reader Exclusive: Attend VIP-Only Launch for Hlaska Women’s Collection

We’re partnering with Hlaska to offer SF Indie Fashion readers a special, exclusive treat: the chance to preview the style-savvy menswear label’s new handbags and apparel for women before they are available in stores during an invite-only launch party on Friday. Want in? Read on for the details.

It stands to reason that we’d be fans of Hlaska, a Burlingame company known for functional menswear and accessories with a subtly sleek, contemporary edge. Not only is the label launched in 2005 by Anthony Mazzei and Chad Hurley (you might also know him as co-founder of a little company called YouTube) locally-grown in the Bay Area, but it’s also committed to producing its garments and accessories in the United States. And the tech-friendly vibe of the men’s line doesn’t hurt. We are, after all, suckers for anything at intersection of fashion and technology.

The first items from the new Hlaska women’s collection arrive in stores this weekend and will be available online soon after, but we can do you one better: we’re offering a limited number of readers entry to the company’s invite-only launch party on Friday, April 15, at the Fillmore Street store. Attendees will be the first to have an opportunity to view and shop from the collection, which debuts with handbags, jackets and hoodies. The party also promises a chance to peruse new menswear items, enjoy food and drink, mingle with the Hlaska design team and co-founder Chard Hurley and learn what’s coming next from the label. Also, in honor of tax day, Hlaska will pay the sales tax on any purchases you make during the event.

Ready to go? Just tell us this one thing: “Who is the Hlaska woman?”

We’ll also take your answers via email at giveaways@sfindiefashion.com, Twitter, our Facebook page or in the comments section below.

Attendees will be notified by Thursday at the latest.

Need a hint? See below for a little more background on the company.
