Not everyone featured in Tuesday’s Fashion Feud finals will be warring on stage. While designers Alexandria Von Bromssen, Julia Meeks and Gail B. Shrive battle it out on stage, vendors will be there to catch your roving eyes with an array of locally-made apparel, accessories and art.

The creators of the goodies shown here are among the local designers coming out to play and setting up shop at the style showdown.

News: New Home for Acrimony, Deals, Vintage and More Vintage

October 19th, 2009

project-transaction-cuff

Sunday night music festival festivities are not conducive to Monday feats of motivational magic, especially when it is raining. In other news…

Leather cuffs and hand-printed leather belts in Project TransAction’s etsy shop are now 20 to 30 percent off through Oct. 22.

SFist’s Bag Lady goes to Shotwell.

Acrimony has a new home in Hayes Valley.

AliceandIsa is offering two noteworthy perks right now. Through the end of October, shop this San Francisco-based online retailer devoted to local designers, and you’ll receive $10 in “holiday credit” for every $100 you spend. From Nov. 27-30 (i.e. the days between Black Friday and Cyber Monday), you can redeem the credit towards purchases on the site – just in time for holiday gift-buying. Also, through Dec. 15, for every pair of Jennifer Tuton Fleur de Lys earrings sold, AliceandIsa will donate 10 percent to San Francisco-based non-profit FortheBayou.org in support of its efforts to save wetlands surrounding New Orleans.

In need of a new fall workout routine? We hear that The Dailey Method is now offering a $199-per-month promotional rate for unlimited classes good at its locations in Cow Hollow, Rincon Center, Corte Madera and Burlingame when you make a six-month commitment.

The Brooklyn Circus is turning heads this week with its newly-arrived supply of vintage deadstock eyewear.

Bay Area-based online retailer and indie fashion devotee Moxsie recently added an Eco Shop to its ever-growing site. In it, you’ll find eco-minded apparel and accessories by independent labels such as Alchemy Goods, fiftyseven-thirtythree, Ach Ach Liebling and Sust.

Anica has new vintage in stock.

Bell Jar has new wearables by Eskell.

SFBayStyle reports that 50+ vintage vendors will descend upon Alameda this weekend for the Vintage Clothing and Style Festival.

Nasty Gal is stoking our envy with its recently-arrived velvet power-shoulder blazer.

From the top, some lovely things we spotted at the Union Design festival held yesterday in Hayes Valley:

- Matchbox necklaces by L.A.-based Jenny and Jimbob. We love how each of these includes not only a necklace, but also a handmade box and super-cute wording on the front of each. Love these as little gift ideas.

- We love how Harbinger Co.’s earrings feature hand-painted details on bamboo.

- Fringe makes us happy, so better believe we were oh-so-pleased to spot this piece from Hengst.

- Talk about eye candy. We just want to devour the vintage beads and baubles in the colorful pieces from Sora Designs.

- Recycled billboards, rock climbing harnesses, sails, seat belts and more become colorful (not to mention durable) messenger bags by RossCo.

- Lapels stand on their own as necklaces from Nous Savons.

- Feathers make our hearts aflutter in this wall of earrings from Kucoon Designs.

Want more pics from Union Design? Be sure to check out Lorraine’s recap of the event tomorrow on 7×7.com’s Glamwatch.

Fall in Line with Coma and Cotton

October 7th, 2009

coma-and-cotton-leggings-1

There are fine lines we can do without (like the ones on our foreheads, not to mention those between love and hate and just enough and a bit too much). But we’re more than happy to fall in line with the freehand drawings gracing shirts, leggings and hoodies from San Francisco label Coma and Cotton.

The apparel project from local artist Kevin Scott Hailey features wearables for men and women emblazoned with hand-drawn, abstract drawings inspired by a heady mixture of human experience, world travel, mandalas, psychedelia-tinged dreamscapes, mind-bending spiritual traditions, Native American iconography and, in essence, just about anything else that happens to pour forth from the artist’s subconscious.

Hailey transfers his drawings to silk screens and prints them on cotton basics, often from Alternative Apparel.

“I use all water-based inks and dyes and try to use organic cotton when I can,” says Hailey, a member of San Francisco’s Million Fishes arts collective.

Want to peruse Coma and Cotton in person? You’ll find the label’s work currently housed in independent fashion-friendly shops such as Gravel and Gold, Backspace, Arkay Workshop, Needles and Pens and Park Life. Or collide virtually with Hailey’s work by visiting the Coma and Cotton etsy shop, visiting his web site and perusing his paintings on Flickr.

Go On, Inhale: L’Aromatica Fragrance Collection

September 11th, 2009

The next time you’re nosing around for a new fragrance, treat your olfactory senses to L’aromatica, a locally-made collection of perfumes, eau de toilettes and colognes by Loreto Remsing.

From her San Francisco home, Remsing blends solid and liquid fragrances and sprays for men and women in aromas ranging from the dessert-inspired Sugar Blossom and Kulfi scents to powdery, exotic Moroccan Musk and single floral blends in cherry blossom, honeysuckle and yellow rose. Along with pre-blended fragrances, Remsing concocts custom scents using a personality profile she creates from clients’ preferences, interests and astrological signs.

“That’s my specialty. I love working with people and making a custom blend,” says the perfumer, a professional graphic designer who turned a decade of mixing and blending favorite scents as a pastime into a part-time pursuit two years ago.

Available in both all-natural varieties that rely on essential oils and traditional scents that incorporate some synthetic materials, L’aromatica stands out not only for offering a wide variety of unique and hard-to-find aromas (wine-glazed pear, anyone?), but also for its surprisingly affordable price points. Custom perfumes, for example, are available for $30 and arrive in about two weeks. And for those who’d prefer to sniff before they commit, Remsing offers $1 sample vials of her most popular fragrances.

Get a whiff of L’aromatica in person at the San Francisco Museum of Craft and Folk Art Store, keep up with Loreto’s latest news via her blog or shop all of L’aromatica’s latest offerings on etsy.
