Phew. The week is almost done-zo, except, of course, for the best part. The weekend part. Wish me luck as I try to sell my 13-year-old car that’s crusted in birdie poop to some brave citizen. In the meantime, do check out all this lovely indie fashion news:

- Designers: feelin’ a last minute vending oppie? Get in touch with Kelly of Still Life and Indie Mart fame. The first outdoor Indie Mart Street Fair event goes down next weekend in Potrero Hill, and they’ve got a few outdoor spaces left. Contact missionindiemart (at) gmail (dot) com if you’re down.

- Online jewelry shop LittlePretty is having a sale on lovely items by Gorjana, Saylor Sage, Milara Designs, Juliet Ross and more.

- GAMA-GO wants to be your friend with benefits. Hence its new Friends with Benefits Membership Tiers, which are available through July 31 only. Basically, fork over some cash ($80 and up) for membership benefits like limited edition art, a two-year merchandise discount and your name on the window of the flagship store once it opens. All proceeds go toward the opening of the flagship store.

- My Roommate’s Closet just got new merch from Raven denim, Catherine Malandrino and Milly (love!!).

- HeidiSays is finishing its summer sale off with a bang. All sale items in the three Pacific Heights boutiques are now 50 to 75 percent off.

- Designers: Wanna be in the November 2008 Bazaar Bizarre show? Applications are being accepted through July 29, so get to it.

- Local plus-size women’s apparel label Harper Greer reports that it will not be losing its Berkeley store, after all. To celebrate, both the San Francisco and Berkeley stores will be offering 20 percent off all sale merchandise through the end of the month.

Were looking for a variety of people for a fashion shoot! You can be Goodwill’s next top model if you think you fit one of these categories:

* Young guys and gals 18-30, with a flair for fashion. Someone who really knows how to rework an old outfit or a piece of clothing. It’s your personal style and individuality were interested in.
* Funky fun families - Moms, dads, sons and daughters. If you can’t all make it at once then bring who is available.
* We also want some enthusiastic moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas. You’ve seen the styles change from Zoot suits to Jimmy Choo’s. So you know a thing or two about fashion.

SEND US YOUR INFO
To be considered, you’ll need to send:

1. A recent photo (non professional)
2. Contact information including phone number, email and mailing address

So reply to this email now - GScelta (at) sfgoodwill (dot) org - and become a Goodwill star!

Thank you for your continued support,

Goodwill Industries

- R.A.G. and Lemon Twist will be closed for the month of July while the Hayes Valley building they’re in undergoes renovations. Both stores are offering sales until the 30th - so stop by now and get your fix.

- Been missing those free-for-all Swap SF events? Well, you aren’t alone. Turns out the organizers have had to put the popular clothing exchange events on hold for two reasons:

1) the events draw so many people that they can no longer be held at Cellspace in the Mission. So if you know of a place that can hold 450+ people, has an entertainment license and isn’t crazy expensive, let the Swap SF people by emailing jason (at) swapsf (dot) com.

2) The organizers’ other business, Lollyphile, has been slammed with orders for absinthe lollipops. Since launching last fall, the company has become something of a local sensation - so instead of organizing swaps, they’ve been making candy and filling orders at a breakneck pace.

- The Bay Area Guide to Independent Fashion Festival has been moved from September to October. It will now take place on Oct. 11 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. We are proud to be co-sponsoring this event. If you’re interested in participating as a vendor, volunteering or sponsorship opportunities, get in touch by emailing Letitia at bayareafashion (at) yahoo (dot) com.

Getting Smashed with Smashing Darling

May 7th, 2008

smashing-darling-linktrade.jpgOkay, okay, we didn’t really get smashed. That’s a little hard to do when you’re on opposite coasts. But I did have a smashing time interviewing Trish and Julie, founders of the fabulous indie fashion marketplace Smashing Darling. For the uninitiated, Smashing Darling is home base for a slew of indie apparel and accessories designers, who create virtual boutiques to sell their wares to indie fashion fans like yours truly. In addition to being an online fashion house, the site allows designers to post profiles and videos, hold online sample sales and get direct feedback from people who visit the site. Visit the site, and you’ll find Bay Area names like Funk Divine, Mzz Rzz, FiftySeven-ThirtyThree and The Urge to Adorn.

Read on as Smashing Darling fills us in on the feel-good nature of indie fashion, hot places to find indie fashion, the most important things to do when launching a new designer label and more.

There are so many things going on in the independent fashion world today. It can be exhausting to try to keep track of it all! Events and shows in cities around the country (and the world), magazines, blogs, new web sites are popping up all the time. How do you keep your finger on the pulse of what’s going on?

Smashing Darling: We are constantly searching for content to promote the indie fashion world. A lot of the content in our blog is fed to us by our community emailing us what they are up to or about cool indie events happening around the country. So please, if you know of an indie fashion event happening, email us. We would love to blog about it.

We’re pretty sure we could write the answer to this ourselves, but we’d like to know, from your perspective, how Smashing Darling differs from other online marketplaces, including etsy and ebay?

Smashing Darling: The biggest difference is that we are a niche market really catering to the specific needs of indie fashion designers and customers searching for fabulous indie fashion.

For new and emerging designers, which do you think is the better approach: to go full speed ahead promoting yourself and your line even if you aren’t quite sure whether you can sustain it over the long term or how you’re going to make ends meet - or to slowly release fewer items, even if that means less exposure and fewer sales, and grow organically bit by bit?

Smashing Darling: I would have to say which ever way feels most comfortable to them. When going into business, sometimes all you have is yourself, so do what best fits your life, personality, and resources. I will say, if you do decide to go full speed ahead, be smart. Make sure you know how to make ends meet. For more tips on starting out, check out Smashing Darling blogging at DIYthing.

How can the average indie fashion addict, like myself, justify spending more money to have clothing that’s one-of-a-kind, unique, handmade or otherwise indie? I’m often searching for that answer!

Smashing Darling: We believe in slow fashion. Think about the Slow Food movement. People are spending a lot more on organically grown produce and farm fresh products because they care, they want to know where and who their food is coming from, and because it positively contributes to their community. The same is true for indie fashion. Isn’t it great to know that every piece has a story and is helping a local economy? The fact that the pieces are one-of-a-kind, handmade, and/or unique is why they are special and worth every penny.

Do you think there’s any credence to the notion that becoming a mom often leads to becoming more focused on indie goods? I’ve noticed this shift among some of my peers, and I’m curious how and why this happens.

Smashing Darling: Becoming a mom definitely allows you to take a fresh look at everything in your life. That’s the nature of seeing things through a child’s eyes. There’s lots of re-evaluating your current ways of doing things. So, yes it has (for us) been a way to examine the choices we make in not only our clothing, but also our food and lifestyle. We realize that we want the best for our children, and what is best for them is also best for us. It’s a natural extension.

When you’re starting out as a designer, what are the top three things you should have in place before you launch your new business?

Smashing Darling: Assuming you know how you are producing your line (if not that is absolutely the most important), otherwise: labels to put in your garments, a venue to sell your product and the start of an email list to continually add to, so you can stay in direct contact with your customer.

Other than Smashing Darling, of course, what are some of your favorite organizations supporting independent designers, indie fashion and/or D.I.Y. culture?

Smashing Darling: GenArt, Refinery29, Fashion Replant, Nylon Magazine, Venuszine, DIY City Mag, Bust Magazine, N.E.E.T Magazine, IQONS, The Market NYC, The Edge*ny NOHO ,Catwalk Genius, Portland Fashion Week, Ultra, of course SFindiefashion…and every blogger out there talking about the world of indie fashion.

Lastly, tell us what we have to look forward to with Smashing Darling 2.0!

We are currently redesigning the site so it has a stronger indie fashion look and presence on the web. Designers will have mini blogs in their stores so customers can keep up with their favorite designers and what they are up to. We are going to offer personal shopping experiences to shoppers that will be like having their own personal stylist. There will also be more ways for a shopper to filter their shopping experience, so they find exactly what they are looking for.

Be a Dr. Martens Designer

May 1st, 2008

dr-martens.jpgGot a soft spot for Docs? The iconic footwear (or should be say arse-kicking) company Dr. Martens has launched a design contest that allows anyone to create a pair of decorated, tricked-out boots online and submit them - the winning designs (they’ll pick two) will be sold in stores.

But the best part has got to be the online design tool. Back in the day man, you got a silver paint pen and drew weird squiggles and dots on the backs of your boots and thought you were really bohemian, sort of a Dead Head with a slight infusion of head-stomping punkitude. Oh, wait, that was just me. But yeah, this new tool is prett-aye, prett-aye cool.

SF Indie Fashion News Roundup

April 11th, 2008

News, news, news you can use.

- Designers, take note: The Nova Studio in Richmond is launching a new series of business classes aimed at crafters and artists who want to take their pursuits to the next level. Workshops include weekend sessions in branding for handmade products, best practices for participating in craft shows, social networking for artists and crafters and online selling and marketing. Each class is $59, but you can knock $5 off the price of each class when you sign up for two or more of the four-class series.

- Okay, people. How could you NOT enter the weekly doe photo contest? Just snap a pick of one of your fave items from the shop and send it in. You could win a $150 gift certificate to this Lower Haight boutique.

- We hear that My Roommate’s Closet just got new garb from T-Bags, Manoush & J Brand.

- Chrissy Bee is having its very first buy one, get one free sale through the end of April. See our post on it here.

- Only three more days left for the Pop Junkie Spring Sale!

- This Saturday - i.e. tomorrow - AC Clothing & Bags and Porcelynne are teaming up for another open house in Oakland. I stopped the last one they had. Great setting, great deals and a great vibe. Big huge shopping events are fun, but it was really refreshing to stop by one where I could share a glass of wine with the designers and chat in a social setting instead of the harried mayhem that usually accompanies large indie shopping events. The event runs from 6pm to 10pm - check out the SF Indie Fashion Calendar for directions.

- I just learned that Glam.com will be sponsoring a Style Mob party at Ambassador in San Francisco on April 24th starting at 6:30pm. If you haven’t been to Ambassador yet, it’s kinda like the place to get your L.A. fix without leaving the city. I’m waiting for more info about the event and will post it when I have it.

- Also, speaking of stuff to look forward to, I was lucky to be able to preview some of the pieces in the upcoming Discarded to Divine show, thanks to organizers Sally Rosen and Gensler’s Tana Hall and Lorraine Navarro. They led me on a walk-through of several pieces currently displayed in the Gensler offices downtown. I’m working up a detailed post on the experience. Stay tuned for that.

- I also happened by Pandora’s Trunk today and had a little fun digging through the funky, earthy wares by designers like Onerary, Josephy Hall, Tamo Design, Miranda Caroligne, Medium Reality, Lara Grant and Jen Hall. If you’re in the Lower Haight, make sure to check this spot out.

Now get outta here. Shoo. Time for weekendness.
