Mom’s the Word

July 14th, 2008

tedda-hughes-sfindiead.jpg

We have a very exciting deal for SF Indie Fashion readers from local artist, designer and mom-preneur Tedda Hughes. Use the code SFINDIE to save 20 percent on her kidswear, which ranges from basics like rainbow striped baby leggings, t-shirts and hoodies to imagination-sparking pettiskirts and handmade dolls. The collection hits stores this fall, but SF Indie Fashion readers can get it on the cheap - before anyone else.

Tedda is definitely one local mom who’s down with the indie ethos (and by down, we mean all about it). When we were corresponding recently, she explained her devotion to indie kids products like this:

Indie fashion (as well as gear and toys) makes kids smarter and more physically fit. Licensed anything leads to less creative play and limited/scripted activity. Mass marketed, non-local clothing and toys lead to children being dull in every sense. Anyway, I am curing type 2 diabetes in children with my work. That may be an exaggeration, but not as much as it sounds.

We hear you on that sentiment miss Tedda! Long live dress-up boxes, popscicle stick picture frames and the fine art of climbing trees.

Nice Knockers!

July 8th, 2008

double-j-knockers.JPG

When I first checked out San Ramon jewelry designer Jean Jackson’s designs on her site Double J Jewelry, I immediately fell for her collection of lariats - and the creative names she’s given them (bet you’ve never heard of a necklace called creamed corn before…). One of my favorites? The Round Copper Knockers style shown here. And at $20, this copper and crystal adornment certainly occupies indie fashion deal territory.

Jean has been designing earrings, bracelets, necklaces and rings for the last two years. You can catch her latest work on her site, in her etsy shop or in person at East Bay craft shows and fairs happening throughout the summer (schedule available in her etsy shop).

Zolita Closing Sale

May 1st, 2008

zolita_store.jpg

I was sad today when an invitation to the Zolita closing sale popped up in my inbox. Only open for a year, this Mission boutique got my attention with its trendy-yet-unusual inventory, cool vibe and - of course - the white furry rug! Well, folks, sad to say, but owner Jules is closing up shop at the end of the month. Everything is on sale - even the furniture and fixtures.

When I talked to Jules this morning, and she told me that she’s had several people come in during the last few days and buy 15 or more items at a time. Here’s why: when you purchase five or more things, you’ll get 75 percent off the total price. How’s that for a serious bah-gin? If you buy four items, you get 50 percent off. For one to three, it’s 30 percent off.

If you’re looking for a fab outfit for a Friday night Mission hang - or maybe something to don during the Maker Faire this weekend, this is the place.

Buy Here Now: Sales, Promos

April 30th, 2008

Since we’ve been gone, a bundle of SF Indie Fashion news has piled up! (Apologies to anyone who has not received a reply or had their event posted on the calendar - we’re quickly getting back to speed and should be caught up by tomorrow). To give everyone proper time in the blog post spotlight, we’re splitting up news this week into a few different posts. Let’s start with sales, promos and discounts from local designers:

My Windup Bird - This local label is turning four in May. Many congrats to designer Wendy! Four years doing the indie street wear design thing is quite a feat. To celebrate, the online shop is offering a free tee with every order. Dude, free tee! What’s more, a percentage of all sales are donated to non-profits like FINCA.

Peggy Li - Peggy’s handmade jewelry is 20 percent off with coupon code save20 through May 13.

New Leaf -Pretty much everything (screenprint tees, hoodies, thermals) at this label’s online store is on sale right now.

Porcelynne - Jennifer is extending her online sale: 65 percent off lingerie, camis, etc. I always thought underwear would be one of those items I wouldn’t be able to find from an indie source. I scooped up some boy shorts and tanks from this Oakland-based indie lingerie designer a few weeks ago, and I’ve been very pleased with them (and the obscenely low prices). They fit really well - the tanks are great layering pieces. If you’re worried about pinpointing your size while ordering online, think about visiting Jennifer’s studio instead. She has flexible hours and a really nice live-work space where she displays her collections.

Spa Radiance - Looking for a posh way to pamper mom on Mother’s Day? Book an appointment for your mom for Saturday May 10th or Sunday May 11th, mention the spa’s Mother’s Day Special, and this ultra-luxe Marina spa will gift her with a goodie bag of all-natural skincare products during her treatment.

ooma - Time to detox. Luckily, at ooma, doing so doesn’t have to mean giving up wine or, um, anything else that we would never, ever do. Take your scary, toxic nail polish bottles to this North Beach boutique between now and May 15, and you’ll walk away with coupons for non-toxic nail polish from British company butterLondon. But that ain’t all. For giving up your old school polish, ooma will reward you with 15 percent off your entire purchase.

SF Indie Fashion News Roundup

April 11th, 2008

News, news, news you can use.

- Designers, take note: The Nova Studio in Richmond is launching a new series of business classes aimed at crafters and artists who want to take their pursuits to the next level. Workshops include weekend sessions in branding for handmade products, best practices for participating in craft shows, social networking for artists and crafters and online selling and marketing. Each class is $59, but you can knock $5 off the price of each class when you sign up for two or more of the four-class series.

- Okay, people. How could you NOT enter the weekly doe photo contest? Just snap a pick of one of your fave items from the shop and send it in. You could win a $150 gift certificate to this Lower Haight boutique.

- We hear that My Roommate’s Closet just got new garb from T-Bags, Manoush & J Brand.

- Chrissy Bee is having its very first buy one, get one free sale through the end of April. See our post on it here.

- Only three more days left for the Pop Junkie Spring Sale!

- This Saturday - i.e. tomorrow - AC Clothing & Bags and Porcelynne are teaming up for another open house in Oakland. I stopped the last one they had. Great setting, great deals and a great vibe. Big huge shopping events are fun, but it was really refreshing to stop by one where I could share a glass of wine with the designers and chat in a social setting instead of the harried mayhem that usually accompanies large indie shopping events. The event runs from 6pm to 10pm - check out the SF Indie Fashion Calendar for directions.

- I just learned that Glam.com will be sponsoring a Style Mob party at Ambassador in San Francisco on April 24th starting at 6:30pm. If you haven’t been to Ambassador yet, it’s kinda like the place to get your L.A. fix without leaving the city. I’m waiting for more info about the event and will post it when I have it.

- Also, speaking of stuff to look forward to, I was lucky to be able to preview some of the pieces in the upcoming Discarded to Divine show, thanks to organizers Sally Rosen and Gensler’s Tana Hall and Lorraine Navarro. They led me on a walk-through of several pieces currently displayed in the Gensler offices downtown. I’m working up a detailed post on the experience. Stay tuned for that.

- I also happened by Pandora’s Trunk today and had a little fun digging through the funky, earthy wares by designers like Onerary, Josephy Hall, Tamo Design, Miranda Caroligne, Medium Reality, Lara Grant and Jen Hall. If you’re in the Lower Haight, make sure to check this spot out.

Now get outta here. Shoo. Time for weekendness.
