Shop Independent Fashion Designers on Style Elevation

Style Elevation is an online boutique that carries a variety of fabulous emerging designer brands. Karri Ann Frerichs, the founder of Style Elevation gives shoppers a unique experience to shop in-season collections as well as pre-season collections from independent designer brands. I personally find Style Elevation to be a one stop shop for fashion forward, eco-conscious and independent fashion lovers.

Althea Harper-Spring 2011

1. Moda Epidemic: How was Style Elevation born?

Karri Ann Frerichs: I’ve had so many requests from shoppers finding great styles on Altitude Promotion that I determined there was definitely a need to sell directly to the consumer the complete lines from each of the brands I represent.

2. ME: What brands do you carry on Style Elevation? What would qualify a brand to become a part of Style Elevation family?

KF: As of now, I carry each of the brands that I already represent through the Altitude Showroom. I look to add more as I further market the site. I’d like to look at more local and eco-friendly designers as I really believe in the eco-friendly fashion movement.

Current list of Designers:

- Althea Harper, Project Runway Season 6 Finalist whose styles have been worn by the Kardashian sisters, and who has been named by WWD, Style.com and Refinery29 as a top emerging designer.
- Amber Pollard Handbags, for the savvy working woman on the go, featuring a stylish lunch bag, waterproof interiors and expandable features in top quality leather, suede, or eco-friendly vegan styles.
- Everyday Apparel and Shoes for Men and Women featuring unisex stretch skinny denim styles. Vegan shoes and apparel all produced fair trade out of Bali.
- Heike Jarick, German-born women’s ready-to-wear fashion designer based in New York whose collections are known for elegant draping and layering with luxurious outerwear, dresses, and separates.

Haike Jarick

- John S. Brana Jewelry, featuring vibrantly colored patina, nature-inspired in textured metals jewelry all handcrafted in San Francisco.
- Lorian Lindsay, San Francisco women’s ready-to-wear designer featuring all natural, high quality textiles in vintage-inspired designs that are upscale and very wearable, including signature jackets, versatile dresses, and elegant separates.
- REVEAL Handbags and Accessories are 100% recycled or sustainable and the brand donates to plant a tree with each sale. Elegant day bags and evening bags for women, unisex messenger bags, and the very popular bamboo collection of watches and tech accessories.
- Sittella by Althea Harper, the organic bamboo collection of dresses, scarves, tops and skirts by Althea Harper.

3. ME: What is unique about Style Elevation and the products you sell?

KF: Each of the brands we carry are up and coming fashion designers from San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle and Bali. Because these are the brands that we sell to stores through AltitudePromotion.com, we know each style inside and out, exactly how it feels, fits, what it looks best with, how to accessorize it, etc. As sales reps we work with each collection 1-2 seasons before it becomes available to the public, so by the time it’s available in season, we know the best sellers, the styles that fit the most people, the colors that look best, etc. We’ve already tried each item on, put outfits together and know just how it fits on a variety of body types.

4. ME: What do you think about San Francisco fashion community, local emerging designers and new trends. Do we compete well with the cities like Los Angeles or New York?

KF: San Francisco is full of so much talent. New designers are emerging each month and we have a good core of established designers that call SF home. We also have a great core of passionate promoters, event producers, bloggers, writers, stylists, etc. The thing we are missing that Los Angeles and New York have, though is a centralized hub, we’re very scattered and often disjointed. The thing that will put us on the map and help us establish a true SF fashion identity is creating an industry destination, a centralized hub from which the industry can grow. A central location where buyers can come and see dozens of designers and showrooms at once.

5. ME: What are the challenges that independent designers face when they first start out? What is a piece of advice you’d give someone who wants to get their brand noticed. Where do they start?

KF: New brands are competing with already established name brands and so they have to offer something really special or be competitive in price. Also, new designers need to make sure they have all their systems in place and professional quality sales collateral before they approach buyers, sometimes that takes a couple season to really fine tune. AltitudePromotion.com offers new designer consultation services:)

6. ME: What is your latest favorite emerging brand?

KF: I just really love my latest brand REVEAL – their so innovative, everything they make is recycled or sustainable and they have a new iPhone, iPad accessory line. The quality is top notch and they really have all their details and logistics figured out. They’re so easy to work with and sell great!

ME: Thank you!

Mariele Ivy Jewelry

Mariele Williams is a San Francisco independent jewelry designer and artist. Her pieces are unique creations inspired by “symbiosis of humans and their environment” as she mentions in her biography. Mariele’s work is inspired by nature and her home state Montana. In her collections you can’t find two pieces that are alike and the materials she works with are mostly her family’s and friends’ finds from Montana region: feather, fossil, wood or leather. I am personally a huge fan of the rawness of her design, the story behind each piece and remarkable craftsmanship.

Lace Jewelry

Leyna Lightman is a San Francisco jewelry designer whose inspiration is one of the greatest fabrics of all “lace”. Lace is rarely associated with jewelry and if you are not a big fan of lace I bet Layna can change your mind about it.

Moda Epidemic: How did you start making jewelry and why?

Leyna: I am so inspired by local designers and I love to rock their big, bold earrings because I have a short haircut. I always saw jewelry as such a fun art form (I have a special place in my heart for earrings) and I often saw objects and images that seemed like they would lend themselves to a fun new pair. One day I found some truly gaudy lace appliques at a discount fabric store and I took them home and hung them on earring hooks and they became incredibly elegant.

Moda Epidemic: What inspires you?

Leyna: Besides local artists and designers, I am thrilled by the challenge of re-purposing materials. It’s not recycling, but I am taking things like bridal lace, trim for quincenera dresses etc… and making it into jewelry that is somehow really hip and wearable on an everyday basis. Sometimes I stand in the fabric store staring at a bolt of lace and turning it in circles and upside down before I know how to alter it to make it work for me. Sometimes I have to dye it different colors to make the design pop the way I want it to. In fairness, I have help in this department. I know the employees at my favorite go-to fabric stores by name and they keep me in mind when they have new shipments. I could buy things online, and may do that in future, but I truly love showing up at the lace counter and saying, “alright Laura. Whaddya got for me today?”

Moda Epidemic: Why did you choose lace to work with?

Leyna: Lace has a rich, long history. Before machine-made lace it was created by hand and was very much a “woman’s craft.” Today it is often used in uber feminine purposes like wedding dresses. This history is an important aspect of the re-purposing of the lace because I am sort of turning those ideas on their heads by doing something new. Plus, lace is so light! You can really go big with the designs because it won’t pull.

Moda Epidemic: I love lace. It’s just so elegant, sexy and I think it’s timeless.

Moda Epidemic: What are you future goals and dreams?

Leyna: My family is Turkish and I just came back from a wedding in Istanbul. I found all of this great lace in the Grand Bazaar and I am having a ball dying it and making new jewelry. I really want to start digging for more lace in other, new places- maybe as close as LA. Lace hunts are a great way to get familiar with a place. Also, selling in San Francisco has been such a satisfying way to become more connected to my community. I love building relationships with store owners, other designers and customers. I am really looking forward to doing a lot more of this as my business grows

Eco-Friendly Fashion

There is a lot of buzz around eco friendly, ethical fashion. People have become more and more environmentally conscious and they put a lot of thought and care in what they wear, were it came from and how it was made. I came across FluffyCo not too long ago and I instantly fell in love with the products they sell, the originality of design and their approach to sustainable, ethical production. FluffyCo is a small San Francisco based brand founded by a Polish native Paulina Berczynski. It carries a variety of products from basic apparel: T-shirts, hoodies to leather goods like wallets and belt buckles and even a really adorable eco friendly baby line. I absolutely love the uniqueness of Paulina’s design and it only makes my happy that a lot of her ideas come from her native country Poland where I am from as well. FluffyCo is sold online but also in many boutiques in the United States and abroad.

I had an amazing opportunity to ask Paulina several questions and she was kind enough to talk about FluffyCo vision, inspirations and the new line.

1. What’s unique about Fluffy brand?

We’re small and largely self-sufficient, super design forward but with a definite eye on sustainable production of clothes and green design. There’s a definite trend these days towards “art driven” brands where a company’s designs are generated by a number of artists on contract. This makes for some cool T-shirts, but my interest in this business came from designing T-shirts, not selling them. I still design all the graphics for the entire product line myself. So I think it’s our aesthetic, and our values based business culture that sets us apart.

2. What was your inspiration for creating your new Fall 2010 collection?

While designing this season, I was mostly living in Lodz, Poland, where I was born. Each season is inspired by themes in nature and art, but this time there’s a little bit of Eastern European influence as well. Our Thinking of the print was inspired by some graphics in Polish poster art, we have a Russian flower print dress, and a few more feminine tee shapes to choose from.

3. How do you manage to balance out your professional life, running a successful brand and motherhood?

I have a lot of support! The FluffyCo staff is incredibly resourceful and helps we with everything from feedback on new ideas to picking colors for final designs. They handle all of the day to day business so I can devote my time to design, direction, and coming up with new ideas.

My husband is a super supportive and hands-on dad. We have a little daytime baby help during the week too. If I have time to do my work and really focus for a few days a week, when it’s baby time, I can be 100% present and just enjoy the little guy to the fullest. I love my work, but I am just obsessed with the baby. He even inspired me to start the Little Fluffy onesies, which have been very well received so far.

4. What are your favorite new items from this line?

The Wolf Girl tee in natural is epic. I took the sample home from the shows and it’s in heavy rotation. And the boyfriend tee we designed is so casually loose yet feminine, it’s super wearable.

Red tunic in the picture below reminds me of a Polish Flag. I wonder if that was Paulina’s inspiration for this piece.

Thank you Paulina and FluffyCo for a chat!

Earthy Comfort

Hello my friends. I think it is time for a new Look post. As I mentioned in my Sightseeing with Marc post my friend/photographer Paulina took a ton of pictures of me in different outfits. I am excited to show you the next Look she photographed. As you scroll down you’ll see some fun pictures of me on the Pilates Ball. We seriously had a ball (no pun intended) shooting those. At some point I fell of that ball and showed my naked butt to the world…. sorry you are going to miss out on those. They are pretty funny.

This outfit reminds me in a way of one of Sienna Miller looks. Frivolous and super comfortable. It just looks like you didn’t try at all. I am in love with those Michael Kors boots. I’ve had them for several years now and as most of my stuff I believe I got them on Ebay. That brown, lamb leather jacket came from Ebay as well. I feel obligated to make a confession to everyone. I am pretty obsessed with good quality leather and I love in particular lamb leather. It’s the softest leather you can get and I love how it feels. I just can’t help it.
