SF Indie Fashion News Roundup

Something in my toaster smells like burning. In other news….

-  Eden and Eden just launched its online store, and it’s just as heavenly as North Beach shop (well, okay, not quite, but almost). On our wish list? The Ivana Helsinki Fringe Scarf and Bat Wing Dress.

- Through Thursday, eco-friendly Bernal Heights boutique Ladita is offering up fall merch at 10 to 30 percent off. Stop by for deals on labels like James Jeans, Stewart + Brown, Eco-Lux, Del Forte Denim, Kim White and Porridge.

-  Later this month, the Arts of Fashion Symposium offers local fashion professionals and fashion students five days of events, competitions, master classes, film screenings and after parties. To get involved and purchase tickets, visit the web site.

- Feeling swappy? Of course you are. Then don’t miss Thursday’s Abundance League Clothing Swap Fundraiser, hosted by Fashion Slave. Bring your old duds, leave with new duds. There’s a $10 suggested donation, though no one will be turned away for lack of funds, and the proceeds benefit SoMA Creativity.

- Also on Thursday, it’s your chance to view gr.dano‘s Fall ’08 collection and save 20 to 30 percent off all styles, as well as 50 percent off pieces from previous collections a the local designer’s party, sale and trunk show. It all goes down from 5 to 11 p.m. at 440 Brannan Studio.

- Okay, Thursday is getting some kinda of busy. That same night, it’s your chance to meet and mingle with jewelry designer Colleen Mauer and beauty go-to JuvEssentials at The Mission Statement Meet the Designers night. And it’s not all talk. Special discounts will be offered during the event.

- The new fall collection from Catherine Jane is now available at the designer’s Presidio Heights boutique. Among the items we covet from the new collection are the High-Waisted Double Godet Skirt and the sassy Le Trench Deux coat.

- We love doing good while we spend, so we applaud Bryna Nicole’s promo for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Through the end of October, 30 percent of the proceeds from all fuschia Hallam Clutches will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

-  Tomorrow’s the last day to get free shipping on orders of $40 or more at Kris Nations, who just debuted a slew of new offerings for fall, including the dramatic Large Blade Earrings. To score the free transport for your goods, use the promo code freeship40oct at checkout.

SF Indie Fashion News Roundup

News, yo.

- Tonight, Hayes Valley boutique R.A.G. is having an art opening (6-9pm) featuring new San Francisco-inspired works by Krista Peel. I’m especially in love with her roomboxes. Like slices of miniature dollhouses for modern times.

- On Sunday, Lower Haight shop and artspace Pandora’s Trunk is having a Bead, Button and Material Swap (1-4pm). A great way to rid yourself of fabric and notions you just can’t stand to look at anymore and pick up some new inspiration.

- Designers dreading April 15, 2008: Urban Solutions will be hosting a free tax workshop on March 5th for small business owners.

- My Roommate’s Closet just received a selection of Diane Von Furstenberg frocks. Perfect for satisfying those pesky designer clothing urges.

- The crazy 75 percent off sale at Hush ends Saturday, and then the boutique is moving to the interweb.

Have An Indie Weekend

Okay, kids. This weekend is chockablock, as a certain Aussie I know would say, with indie shopping ops. If you don’t go to at least one of them, you’re an idiot. Wait a second, that would make me an idiot, because I’ll be out of town for the entirety of the most glorious weekend of pre-holiday indie shopping San Francisco has ever seen. F*cknuts. Here’s to me hoping that you enjoy what I’m going to be missing.

On Friday night, pop into Secession Art and Design for wine, cheese, vintage jewelry and great art at this deep Mission gallery.

Also on Friday night, the Craft Gym will be hosting a trunk show and holiday event featuring local designers, yummy snacks, hot beverages and an idea I totally dig: the Wrap Swap. You know how boring it can get when all your holiday gifts are in the same paper. Well, combat wrapping fatigue by bringing your own wrapping paper to swap with someone else’s. And if you buy something at the event, you can get your wrap on in space provided for wrapping gifts and try your hand at cool present toppers after watching the event’s ribbon tying demonstrations.

Friday through Sunday, local designers like Cookie and the Dude, Hi Ho Silver, Sally Spicer and Baby Jak will be among the many vendors on hand at the Fort Mason Holiday Shopping Gala. This three day affair combines handmade goods from local artisans with wares from Bay Area importers and manufacturers.

On Saturday and Sunday, the East Bay gets fired up for the Crucible’s Annual Holiday Gift Art Sale & Open House. With 75 artisans setting up in this creative workshop’s expansive studio space, the event promises oodles of handmade jewelry, metalwork, glass, ceramics, sculpture and clothing. Oh, and Santa arrives at 1pm. Get your list ready!

Brides to be in search of affordable wedding dresses will want to check out Glamour Closet‘s one day sale this weekend. On Dec. 15th from 9am to 6pm, this North Beach destination for discounted designer gowns will be hosting its largest gown sample sale ever (oh MY god). Labels from Reem Acra to Vera Wang will be marked down to $899 or less. Eat your wheaties before this one, gals. It could get crazy in there.

Lots of chitter chatter about the Bazarr Bizarre has been floating past me of late, and it looks like it’s going to be a fab event. For only $1 admission, you can indulge in crafting workshops (reserve a space in advance ’cause these babies fill up) like Quick and Easy Photo Ornaments with Craft magazine’s Natalie and Reconstruct an Old Button Down Shirt with Miranda Caroligne while perusing gift-worthy items from tons of indie artists and crafters. Check out the complete vendor list for the scoop.

The same afternoon, jewelry designer Anna Andersson will be having a trunk show at Flicka in Pac Heights. Stop by between 2 and 5pm to check her lovely adornments out.

If there’s one event I’ve heard ev’one talking about over the last few weeks, it’s THREAD, a showcase of 100 emerging fashion designers and artists, as well as established labels. This is the event to attend if you’re looking for edgy, fashion-forward looks from up and coming talent and discounts on designer lines you already love. Runway shows, art exhibitions, bumping beats, draaanks and goodie bags complete this fashionista-friendly affair. RSVP online to save $3 on admission (reg. $10).

Circadian Studios is having a holiday shindig this weekend to showcase designer Deanna’s latest designs. Expect bubbly, nibbles and – of course – lots of holiday cheer. Cash, check, Visa/MC accepted. Sunday December 16th 12-5pm. See the SF Indie Fashion Calendar for the address.

Nikki of Prepare for the Playa fame wrote in to tell us about Holi-Daze, a burner-friendly schmorgasbord of indie wares that goes down this Sunday at Cafe Cocomo. Fuzzy bear hoods? Black-light sensitive apparel? Latex accessories (we mean jewelry, not the, ahem, other kind of latex accessory ya guttah brains)? Couture kimonos? Holi-Daze has ‘em all and them some. Check out the event Gift Guide for more of the offerings. And don’t forget to do your part for the San Francisco Food Bank at this event by bringing a canned good to donate – getting in the holiday giving spirit will also win you a chance to score Holi-Daze shopping bucks good for use with any vendor. See SF Indie Fashion Calendar for the detes.

Last but most certainly not least, there’s the funky Guerrilla Fashionista holiday trunk show at Foreign Cinema. With 10 percent of the event’s sale donated to charitable organizations, a fab location and tons of great local designers touting everything from t-shirts to handmade jewelry, this is another great op for last-minute holiday shopping.

My suggestion for making it through the dizzying array of events this weekend? Grab a friend, or schedule several back to back, slam a huge-ass coffee, don a communal dressing room friendly outfit and start early.
