Made in San Francisco, the debut collection from designer Akemi Okamoto is one we’ve been waiting to see since hearing about its in-the-works status several months ago. The mix of airy tops in silk chiffon and chambray pieces is perfectly poised for spring, while structural details (an open back here, an asymmetrical hem there) keep things interesting.
While this may be the first ready-to-wear collection from Okamoto, she’s hardly just starting out. Formerly one-half of the design duo Ashes & Empires, Okamoto has been a regular face on the local design scene for years. Also an instructor at the Academy of Art University, Okamoto has created easy-to-wear separates with a distinctly bohemian femininity. Pants, a skirt and a dramatic v-neck dress rely on chambray imported from Japan, while sheer tops in silk chiffon can be belted or worn free-flowing. An easy cotton jacket surprises with a cut-out back, while folds and unexpected hemlines add visual interest to daytime dresses.
For now, you can spy Okamoto’s spring line at Altitude Showroom in San Francisco.
