Sneak Peek: First Rite Fall Winter 2011

The Fall/Winter 2011 collection from San Francisco-based First Rite is nothing if not darkly ethereal, with long hemlines and loose-fitting silhouettes in a palette of black and white. Here, we share a few images designer Nikki Garcia sent our way.

Tried & True: Laline Body Scrub

When something works, we want you to know about it. The latest beauty product to make us go, wow…you know…that actually really does work is Laline Body Scrub. It’s a top-seller from the company, which chose San Francisco for its U.S. debut, and we can see why.

We had the opportunity to test the body scrub ($24.95) during a media preview event at the Chestnut Street store last week, and it impressed by leaving our hands noticeably softer and smoother. Also worth mentioning is the soft, dessert-like scent of the vanilla patchouli scrub we tried. It wasn’t overpowering like many products with a patchouli fragrance, but instead struck a nice balance between earthy and sweet. Layering with the matching body creme or lotion could easily intensify the fragrance if you’re looking for more.

New to the States as of 2010, Laline is an Israel-based company known for its body scrubs, whipped body soaps (they look like whipped cream at first) and body creams. Scrubs are made with salts from the Dead Sea.

A third Bay Area store is in the works, and we hear it is likely to be in either the South Bay or East Bay. Stay tuned…

White and pink displays and a refreshing scent dominate the scene at Laline on Chestnut Street.

Thoughtfully organized shelves made us want to go home and rearrange everything in our cabinets.

Snap Judgment: Loin T-Shirt

Our very-visual, (almost) chatter-free snap judgment of the day: for a San Francisco t-shirt you won’t find in Fisherman’s Wharf, try the Loin shirt, $25, from San Francisco’s Red Choo Choo, maker of original screen print t-shirts for men, women and children.

Fanning Over: Shellac Nails

These are my nails 11 days after getting a shellac manicure for the first time.

No chips yet. Wonder if I’ll make it the full two weeks these kinds of manicures are supposed to hold up. I’m optimistic. But just the fact that I can now have a chip-free manicure 11 days after the fact is amazing. I’m sold, though the technician that did these said it’s not a good idea to repeatedly get shellac manis without taking a break. She suggested going with regular polish after two or three times or so to keep the nails healthy.

I got these done at Sunset Nails on Dolores at 30th for a relatively inexpensive $25. Most places charge more (and probably pamper you more in the process, but I’m AOK with the utilitarian mani-pedi these days). I was told that the lighter colors tend to chip more quickly, not that I’ve seen that to be true yet, but next time I’ll probably try something darker and more daring.
