While Tinseltown honored the best of small screen at the end of last month, San Francisco had an awards ceremony of its own in the form of Stellar: San Francisco Fashion Awards, an annual show now in its 3rd year from the San Francisco Fashion and Merchants Alliance (SFFAMA). Held on the last Sunday afternoon in August at Pigment Cosmetics’ Market Street headquarters, the event lauded the best in local fashion design, retail, event production and more with an awards ceremony and closed with the runway presentations of capsule collections from designers B Spoke Taylor and Coral Castillo.
Bike-friendly menswear collection B Spoke Taylor unveiled eight looks that blended traditional haberdashery mainstays from tartans and glen plaids to tweeds with unconventional elements such as inverse color blocking, contrasting inseams in bright colors and whimsical accessories. The runway presentation seemed to answer the question, “What does the hip young urban professional wear for work and play and where shall the twain meet?” An updated classic three-piece suit paired a vented jacket with a long walking short, balancing the formality of a vest with a bold green shirt.
Next up was Coral Castillo. The Art Institute of California alum, who started sewing at age 12, has an incredible eye (and hand) for detail. With a predominantly neutral palette of black and grey, the eponymous line was framed around strong silhouettes and feminine design accents. Backstage after the show, Castillo was quick to say she loves creating architectural shapes, which was evident from the grey skirt suiting with funnel neckline, a black and grey color-blocked peplum sheath and a high collar jacket paired with an asymmetrical skirt. The piece de resistance was an eco-chic finale gown featuring paillettes made from recycled shampoo bottles on the tail of a strapless mermaid gown. Who knew sustainable fashion could be so posh?
