A reason to skip out of work early on Friday and head north comes in the form of Bryant Park West, an upscale fashion soiree taking place in Sonoma at the Jacuzzi Family Vineyard and featuring up-and-coming labels such as Hunter Dixon and N PRPA by 23-year-old WWD darling Samantha Sleeper.
Earlier this week, we caught up with Sleeper over coffee at Blue Bottle and found the young Brooklynite to be charming and knowledgeable about both fashion and business in a way that seemed well beyond her years. Launching her line with business partner and owner of Chicago’s She Boutique Nicolette Prpa in March, Sleeper has already scored the cover of Women’s Wear Daily and garnered the attention of many in the fashion world with a fall 2010 collection built around sophisticated ready-to-wear for today’s young, well-heeled professional seeking, in her words, “ladylike elegance with edge.”
We were especially smitten with a tailored dolman dress with sleeves that hug the arms, thanks to strategically-placed zippers, but still allow for easy shoulder and arm movement because of the dolman-style construction. A three-piece suit look adapted for women also caught our eyes with its polished and feminine adaptation of an ensemble usually reserved for formal menswear.
“I think there was a gap for career women’s work wear. Like poised, elegant women. It was really hard for me to find clothes when I was going through that for that career woman in her mid-20’s and up, trying to find pieces that are beautiful and ladylike without being much more mature,” Sleeper told us.
