Checking out The Dresses/Objects Project

Here are two shots from The Dresses/Objects Project, on view through July 18 at Theater Artaud. I popped in yesterday to check out the exhibit of  dresses printed with quotes from poems in Gertrude Stein’s 1914 book Tender Buttons.

I’ll be covering the exhibit later this week on the San Francisco Chronicle’s SF Unzipped blog, so be sure to check out the full write-up there. In the meantime, here are two of my favorite pieces from the show.

It’s a small show, but interesting nonetheless, especially if you are interested in the intersection of fashion, craft, literature and art.

My recommendation would be to stop by the space on a weekend, as the artist behind the project, Katrina Rodabaugh, will be there sewing a final dress to add to the show.

Fresh Faced: The Beauty Company Celebrates New Location

Beauty Company, the beauty supply boutique and salon, has ditched its on-the-corner location on Polk and Green for a fresh, open and much larger space. But the San Francisco beauty destination didn’t move far. Local fans had to walk less than half a block from the original outpost to get to the new location’s launch party at 2325 Polk Street.

At last week’s launch event, the salon was glowing with natural light that highlighted the light brown hardwood floors and contemporary, mostly white interiors. The store was crowded with men and women surveying the airy space, drinking bubbly, devouring the plentiful arrangement of fresh fruit and sushi and indulging in complimentary mini manis.

Separating the salon and nail spa are white modern shelves fully stocked with name brand lines such as Pureology hair products and Korress skin care. The nail salon is supplied with enough Essie and O.P.I colors to please any girl sitting in one of the plush black armchairs.

While most salons rely on doors and private rooms for services like tanning and waxing, Beauty Company now guards your privacy like a bank—with a vault.

“I love the vault, it’s a great feature, and we love it and every single person compliments us on it. It’s amazing,” gabbed owner Sherri Ziesche in between hugs from guests.

The vault isn’t the only reason to pay the store a visit. Says Ziesche:

“Our staff is knowledgeable and helpful…we have no problem giving samples and just helping you find the right fit, the right thing for you.”

Find your right fit at the new location, open seven days a week at 2325 Polk St., SF., www.beautycompanysf.com.

P is For Pride: Making Colorful Strides in Fashion

This post originally appeared on ModelinaMichelle

If ever there were a time to get decked out in one of Kitty Andrews’ colorful head pieces, it would be while wearing one of Magdalena Trevers hand woven swimsuits parading down market street during  The San Francisco Gay Pride Parade. The last float wasn’t just blaring music filled with dancing half naked men in sparkly  spandex shorts (though that was going on too) it was also lined with some of  the most style savvy folks in the SF Fashion scene. Dancing in the streets were designers Kitty Andrews, Magdalena TreverTosca Soraya, Danielle Pettee, Shannon Dietz along with local fashionista and blogger,   Michele Gates, and of course, yours truly. From the colorful photos you’ll also notice the smart and lovely  organizers  behind the up-coming SF Chic Week, Megan Heinan and Janice Ongjoco Bailon clad in local SF flare. A slight shortage in bathing suits didn’t faze these gals, who headed over to Jeremy’s on second to buy an impromptu outfit to compliment one of Kitty’s cute and quirky head- pieces. Celebrating fashion and our invaluable right to choose doesn’t just lend us the right to kiss whom ever we’d like, but a choice to wear whatever makes us feel fabulous, especially if it’s made in San Francisco.
