In the Know: Nous Savons

If there’s one thing nous savons (translation: we know en francais), it’s that we’re enamored of the reconstructed shirts, vests and accessories from local label Nous Savons.

Designer Jocelyn Ngyuen’s creations often play with traditional menswear motifs. In her inventive hands, the sleeves from button down shirts and vests become ruffles and flower-like fabric adornments on reworked versions of the originals. Instead of staying stuck to suits, lapels become bold necklaces bound with heavy chains. You’ll find more chains waiting on the jewelry Ngyuen makes using a mixture of vintage and new metals and charms.

Want to peruse it all in person? You’re in luck. A Nous Savons Trunk Show takes place tonight from from 6-10 p.m at TAXI/CDC’s Collective boutique. During the event, all Nous Savons and TAXI/CDC merch is 25 percent off (we also hear you can save an additional 10 percent by shopping early from 6-7 p.m.).

Drinks + Fashion Bloggers = A Happier Happy Hour

7x7_HappierHourInvitation

What do you get when you put a bevy of Bay Area fashion bloggers, 7×7 magazine readers and style hounds together in a cocktail-infused setting on the last school night of the week? We’d like to think you’re going to end up with one perfectly-buzzed, oh-so-fabulously-dressed crowd, but you’ll have to come out and see for yourself.

During the event, the bloggers featured in this month’s issue of 7×7 magazine (a group that includes SF Indie Fashion founder Lorraine) will be scoping the scene for fashionably dressed male and female specimens. The best-dressed of the bunch will be highlighted in an upcoming issue of the magazine.

Behind the Colorful Head Gear at the Junior League Fashion Show

During the fancifully fun display of Macy’s spring fashions that went down the runway during last Friday’s 84th annual Junior League Fashion Show, our eyes traveled to the brightly-hued headpieces atop models’ heads. When someone at our table whispered that they may have come from a local source, we knew we had to find out more.

The 13 colorful, botanically-inspired hats were made by longtime San Francisco stylist Shauna McCann, a frequent collaborator for Macy’s events and the company’s annual Passport fashion show.

“An accessories boutique owner friend of mine ordered the mini colored hats for me as my base. From there, I used feathers, artificial flowers, butterfly clips, ribbon and wire to make them into botanical pieces. I sewed and glued the elements together and attached hair clips,” says McCann, who very recently relocated to New York.

McCann wasn’t the only stylist creating original pieces for the show. John Lee and Sachi Yamazaki also had their work featured on the runway. Lee’s were featured during the lingerie segment, while Yamazaki created the chess pieces that appeared in the show’s finale.

When next you find yourself lamenting the lack of springy-ness in your wardrobe, don’t think for a second you have to spend a bundle to infuse your day-to-day with worthy warm weather wearables.

Making our point is SF Indie Fashion contributor Tina Wang, who recently emerged from Buffalo Exchange with the three pieces pictured here – each priced at $8 or less.

Another perk of shopping secondhand? An opportunity to reuse fashion and, in so doing, turn your shopping habit into a lower-impact experience for the world-at-large.

From top: lace blouse with shoulder pads, $6; black ruffle tank, $8; halter-neck denim romper, $8.
