You can be ladylike and still get your kicks. Here’s how: tonight at 111 Minna, the lovely women of Ladylike (sister co. to Fatlace) are throwing a soiree that’s one part networking event for independent Bay Area retailers, designers, fashion bloggers, industry insiders and like-minded folks, one part release party for the label’s new hoodie collaboration project with Oakland-based Adapt Clothing and one part sheer excuse to party.

We hear the ladies of Made Jewelry will be in the house with goodies, while the folks from online independent retail shop Moxsie tell us they’re heading there en masse.

To get in on the action, swing by 111 Minna tonight. Hoodie release unleashed at 9pm.

S X 3: Shop. Save. Secession.

secession-outside1

While plenty of shops seem constantly in a the throws of one sale or another, it’s not everyday you hear about a sale at lower Bernal boutique and gallery Secession, and that makes a visit this weekend even more enticing.

All merch – art, clothing and jewelry – in the well-edited space curated by Eden Stein is 10 percent off (which may not seem like much at first, but then you have to consider that everything in the store is legitimate art) and collections from select designers and artists are 20 percent off. You’ll find the extra discounts on jewelry by Colleen Mauer, art by Heather Robinson and Nate1, clothing from De Novo, Kelly Lane and Nicacelly and furniture and fabrics by Swanky Swell. Also, onesies by New Skool are going for a mere $10. Hello, affordable baby gift.

There’s a happy hour shindig tonight from 6:30 to 9:30pm (they’re always a good time) and extended hours (12-8pm) throughout the weekend.

Shopping for Man Kind: Man Up

man-up-flyer-1_29_101

When we met with Mike Maher of Taylor Stitch earlier this week to discuss this weekend’s first Man Up pop-up menswear market, we were immediately sold on the ethos behind the event.

“I like to know where everything I buy comes from. When I purchase things, I purchase for them for the long haul,” explained Maher, who runs San Francisco custom men’s shirt company Taylor Stitch with co-founder Barrett Purdum and Michael Armenta and, with Purdum, is one of five guys behind the Durable Goods Concern, the entity responsible for conceiving of Man Up and making it happen in a mere 25 days.

As readers surely know, we’re big believers in conscious consumerism, buying local and putting the dollars we have (which often aren’t as plentiful as we’d like) into apparel and products that are not only made to last longer than a season, but also hail from companies whose principals and practices we believe in.

And then there are aesthetic concerns to consider. Who doesn’t appreciate a well-dressed man? Barring that, the benefits of cruising around looking like the male equivalent of Debbie Dumptruck are elusive at best.

Putting it plainly, Maher says, “It doesn’t pay to walk out the door looking like a slob.”

If you concur (and even if you don’t), we recommend making a dapper dash to the Man Up this weekend for dude-friendly shopping made easier through the promise of free buzz-inducing beverages, live art and vendors such as AB Fits, Union Made Goods, Xetum, Taylor Stitch, Marine Layer, Cordarounds, Room 4 Vintage, Sui Generis and many others. There’s also a contest you can enter to win a free $220 pair of raw selvage denim jeans.

Time to Get Funked Up

Skunkfunk_Jan-10_Haight_Sale

A not-so-secret sample sale goes down at the new Skunkfunk Haight Street flagship this weekend. Everything in this Spain- and San Francisco-based retailer is marked down between 50 and 90 (woah, 90?) percent to make way for spring merch, but that’s hardly all. We hear from co-manager Kaitlyn that deals on the label’s Euro-minded apparel will be accompanied by turntable action and adult beverages (our favorite kind).
