After nine years in New York City, international designer Lia Kes has chosen San Francisco as her next haven. If you haven’t already seen Kes’ pieces in the style pages of fashion glossies such as Lucky and InStyle or on celebs from Kate Hudson to Kim Kardashian, try stopping by her store opening today and see for yourself.

With a studio in Pacific heights and a list of buyers begging her for her spring collection, Kes is, for the moment at least, focused on her first store opening today in Cow Hollow.

“My hope is to get to know the customer, to listen to them to see how the clothes fit on them, to hear their response…It’s definitely a step forward.  I am glad that I have the opportunity to show my idea the way I want to show it,” Kes said.

She’s also inspired by San Francisco, its micro-climates and its people.

“I’m completely influenced by San Francisco…I like the idea that everyone is working out. There is a sophisticated casualness. There is a lot of intellectuality around, a lot of European taste around,” she told us.

Step into her shop soon to scoop up pieces from her mostly sold-out fall collection or the newly released resort collection. Come early 2010, you’ll find a spring collection with pieces of a new silk, CDC, and charmeuse. The result? Effortlessly chic silhouettes full of femininity, but with a welcome dose of edge.

Lia Kes: 3024 Fillmore St. (at Union), 415-829-2225, www.liakes.com.

Sponsor Love: Creating Layered Looks

Living in San Francisco pretty much requires becoming an expert on strategic layering techniques. One minute, you’re in the sunny Mission enjoying a nice Mitchell’s ice cream cone. The next, you’re lost in a frigid fog-storm atop Twin Peaks or trying to hear what your friend is shouting at you over the high winds at Ocean Beach.

So it should come as no surprise that we were spent more than a few moments studying the Guide to Layering published on SF Indie Fashion sponsor site YesStyle this month. Clearly, you know your tops from your bottoms and accessories. But the simple combinations shown above gave us plenty of ideas for mixing pieces we already own to create looks similar to those shown above.

Really, when it comes down to it, the above images prove that layering pieces well is all about creating the right proportions for your shape.

Flyer Madness: Shopping Events, Fashion Shows + Parties

Staring today, we’ve got the flyers to prove that the holiday madness is more than underway. In fact, it’s reaching its annual all-out frenzy, evidenced by a flurry of shopping events, fashion shows and parties such as the Noise Pop Holiday Shop, Nightvision at Harlot, Artillery fashion show, Secession holiday party, Renegade Craft Fair and the Five and Diamond Holiday Bazaar.

There are, of course, plenty more independent fashion happenings and diversions waiting for your perusal and approval on the SF Indie Fashion Calendar.

We recently we sent SF Indie Fashion contributor Kristina Wang out with $40 and a simple mission: thrift, style, shoot. Her destination of choice: Wasteland in the Upper Haight.

Wang then mixed the spoils from her adventure in with her own pieces to create a series of looks showcasing San Francisco style.

From top: white vintage evening purse ($9), white sundress ($12), blue floral jumper ($10) and cropped denim vest ($10) all from Wasteland. Additional clothing and accessories provided by the ever-stylish Miss Wang.
