Rebel Chic: Rock Candy Design Jewelry

cock sucker necklace

Candy isn’t always best when it’s sweet. Case in point: accessories from Rock Candy Design, a San Francisco jewelry line with a rebellious streak we wholeheartedly approve of.

Pieces like the Brothel Token pendant draw on the shady ladies of the Barbary Coast for inspiration, while the Cocksucker charm necklace caught our eye for its literal sensibilities and obvious conversation starting-appeal. You’ll fare far better than Bret or Daisy with a silver “diamond” as your new Rock of Luv, while metal multi-chain necklaces and bracelets deliver the kind of stage-worthy wow factor we’d use to amp up a simple black top and jeans.

Made by Sheryl Gould, who started out creating jewelry at a young age using wire and materials from her dad’s hardware store, each piece is designed to worn by men or women – a quality she dubs “unisexy.” Gould tells us, “I appreciate seeing men wear jewelry, when they wear it well.”

We concur.

Prices range from $25-$500 and are currently available at Backspace. Stay tuned for an online source: Gould tells us she’s launching her etsy shop soon.

SF Indie Fashion News Roundup

Phew. We haven’t done a news roundup since, well, since we started tweeting. That’s what happens when you start using twitter. But we’d like to get back into the groove. So away we go…

- Interested in becoming an SF Indie Fashion intern, guest blogger or contributor in some other fashion (photography, ad sales…the possibilities are many)? If you’d like to explore ways you can work with us and benefit from it at the same time, get in touch. We’re looking for collaborators of all kinds. You can contact the powers that be using the contact form.

- Candystore Collective is getting its sale on this weekend. Stop by the Mission boutique or use the coupon code MAYSALE at checkout online to score 25 percent off on denim, dresses and t-shirts through Sunday. We hear this is a new thing for the store from owner Jennifer J. – new merch is almost never discounted at the store, so get in while the gettin’s good.

- The Craft Gym is back! Yay! But not at, uh, the Craft Gym. Instead, the folks behind the crafting studio that once was will be bringing their talents to montly events at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art (which happens to have a kick ass store, by the way). Go here to check out all the upcoming summer sessions.

- We hear that 7×7 is looking for all kinds of creative people to contribute to the magazine’s July This is Your San Francisco issue. If you’re a writer or a photographer who’d like to submit material about your town or neighborhood, you’ve got until June 12.

- We’ve got word that Arara will be relocating over the Church Street sometime soon. It’s just a few blocks away from the current San Jose location, but we’d expect the move to bring a lot more visibility to the shop, which happens to be stocked with some prett-ay cool art-meets-clothing finds, feather jewelry, custom leather tool belts (you gotta see ‘em) and bags for men and women.

- Speaking of moving, we are hoping that the rumors are right and that we will soon be seeing She-Bible in the old Church Street Apothecary’s space before long….

- We are really digging Light Vision these days. It’s a new-ish online store that sells mostly local independent designers. We hope to have more to tell you about the store and its founders soon.

- Artists Julie Cloutier and Clare Nereim have launched a micro-line called Stymie that we’re going to be telling you more about soon.

- SF Indie Fashion sponsor YesStyle.com is having a crazy huge sale on its Korean fashion brands through Monday. Be sure to check it out.

- And last but not least, there are tons of cool events happening this weekend, including trunk shows and sample sales from Rebecca Minkoff, Modaspa, Feral Childe and Circadian Studios. We hope you’ll check out the SF Indie Fashion Calendar for all the details.

Trunk Show: Feral Childe and Circadian Studios

Spring collections from far-out independent label Feral Childe and Circadian Studios will be on view this Saturday at Backspace, a boutique we love for its carefully-chosen assortment of indie labels from near and afar.

It’s the only chance Bay Area folks will have to peruse the whole of Feral Childe’s latest collection, named Yosemite in honor of the first camping trip designer Alice Wu ventured on after moving to the Bay Area from NYC. Wu designs the line with Brooklyn-based Moriah Carlson. Together, they produce eye-catching clothing using eco-friendly materials, hand-drawn prints and unexpected color combinations.

Circadian Studios, designed by Deanna Abney (we dig her, as you can tell by this post), joins in the fun with new handmade jewelry and hair accessories.

Note that drinks flow and informal modeling begins at 4 p.m.

Happy to Meet Beautiful Stranger’s Rock ‘N Roll Necklace

beautiful-stranger-necklace

We dig the drapey, asymmetrical look of the handmade Rock ‘N Roll Necklace by local jewelry designer Beautiful Stranger. At $40, this wire-wrapped necklace in silver-plated metal delivers remember-me pizazz with a price tag your wallet may very well soon forget.

Based in San Francisco, Beautiful Stranger is also adding vintage clothing to her etsy shop these days. We’re already enamored of the funky knee socks and pretty sundresses we found there yesterday.
