Just imagine if fashion experiments like the cellphane formal wear show above had taken off? You can ponder that and many other faux pas in fashion history this month and next during the San Francisco Public Library exhibit House of Nat: Fashion Tips from the Schmulowitz Collection of Wit and Humor.
On view through the end of May, the show features photographs, news clips and ephemera depicting haute couture nightmares like the one above, as well as famous folks such as Phyllis Diller caught on camera in attire humorous enough to rival her own jokes.
A few lessons we learned from perusing some preview pics sent by the library:
- If there’s a miniature house on your hat, it’s a surefire fashion foreclosure.
- Elephants should never, ever inspire hairstyles. Ever.
- Never wear something that could also be used to preserve a sandwich’s freshness.
