So I think I’m in love with 440 Brannan, a SoMA studio and showroom inhabited by some of the Bay Area’s best design talents (gr.dano, Saffron Rare Threads, Hieros, The 615 Project, Vex, Verrieres & Sako, Sara Shepherd, Stephanie Wolf to name a few). Last Thursday (I know, I’m moving at the speed of light here) night, the studio held its Fall Fashion Showcase, which was packed thanks to a pick up in Daily Candy’s Weekend Guide and a little MySpace action from gr.dano.
I met several of the designers in person for the first time, including Priya of Saffron Rare Threads, Sara Shepherd and Roger, the designer behind local men’s streetwear label Hieros, as well as the studio’s owner.
Brian of gr.dano was kind enough to show me the back studio where he, partner Jill and several of the other designers work. In a city like San Francisco where studio space is expensive and retail store space even more so, it was really refreshing to walk into a collaborative showroom like this that not only offers its designers space to show and sell their current collections, but also gives them a place to work, use larger equipment than they could reasonably expect to have at home and have an office of sorts to use for buyer and press meetings, etc.
As you know, my photography skills are hideous. But here they are nonetheless.
