Movies, Models, Music, Mayhem @ Canvas Gallery – Sept. 15

It is going to be a seriously fashionable weekend! Too bad I’ll be out of town in steaming hot Virginia. Oh well. Such is life, eh.

But my point: Movies, Models, Music, Mayhem at rockin’ Sunset space The Canvas Gallery (one of my favorite spots in the city – also home to Feria Urbana).

There will be a fashion show by designers Heather Reagan and Ellie Nakamura, as well as live DJ sets and classic movies shown all night. It’s also free before 11pm with rsvp to guestlist. Email guestlist (@) playdoughboy.com.

I couldn’t find any additional information on either designer, but this event would be a good way to get your indie fashion fix without dropping the $$$ to go to GenArt’s Fresh Faces in Fashion event on Saturday. More on that later…

Fall Shoe Trunk Show @ Dress – Sept. 14

If you aren’t headed to Appel & Frank this Thursday night and you’re down to drop some serious cashola, it’d be worth your while to pop by Dress’s Fall Show Trunk Show on Thursday night from 5pm to 8pm. Wine, hors d’oeuvres, special discounts and a sneak peak at faryl robin‘s Spring 2007 Collection are on the menu.

Madrid Bans Skinny Minnies From Catwalk

So I usually stick to Bay Area fashion topics, but I’m at a women’s journalism conference this weekend and feeling all feministy. Or something like that.

With my I am woman hear me roar juices flowing today, I want to give a big hell yeah to Madrid’s desicion to ban ultra skinny models from the catwalk. I guess that may be a little bit discriminatory against women who just happen to be really, really thin (I know a few who are just that way genetically), but that aside, I think it’s really cool (not to mention unusual) for a city to take such a step to project a positive image of female beauty to the fashion community. Nicacelly – Oh, Hell Yeah

nicacelly wrap hoodie.jpgI stole that title line from the Nicacelly web site, but it’s fitting, because that’s exactly what I thought when I put on one of the local designer’s tops at R.A.G. A few weeks back, I was in the Hayes Valley store hunting for something new from a local to sport to Fashion Week. Hey, I figured you gotta represent when you’re going to Fashion Week. I mean, I feel like anytime I go to a fashion-oriented event, I’ve got to wear something indie. Maybe not all indie – because indie pants are really hard to come by. But something…

I ended up buying and wearing a Nicacelly black empire waist tube top. Dy-no-MITE.

Anyway, I was taken by the Nicacelly tops I saw, so I went online to peruse her collection and – wouldn’t ya know it – I found a lot of other cool creations to further contribute to the ultimate drainage of my bank account.

The overall Nicacelly look is decidely urban, but also feminine and imbued with international attitude (think obi belts, tropical flower graphics…).

The web site is definitely worth checking out – tons of cool tops to peruse.
